Outpaced by platforms
Immigrants are overrepresented in Canada’s platform economy, yet platform work is not characterized as legitimate and sustainable within employment services shaped by New Public Management (NPM) and austerity policies. This focused ethnography interrogates limitations of NPM and uses a sociotechnical approach to analyse key informant interviews. Three themes are addressed: (1) Out of scope: the limits of current policy, (2) Systemic lags and the …
Examining Highly Skilled Vietnamese Migrants’ Return Decision-Making through Their Aspirations for the “Good Life” in Vietnam
Research indicates that an increasing number of Vietnamese international students return to Vietnam after graduation, yet migrants’ return decision-making remains understudied. This article draws on eighty-six ethnographic interviews with highly skilled migrants in Vancouver and Paris who have considered or decided against returning to Vietnam, as well as with those who have already returned. Centering on migrants’ aspirations for the “good life”…
The Instrumentalization of French-Speaking Immigration in Canada Within a Colonial and Economistic Approach
Since the early 2000s, immigration has been a key issue for Francophone minority communities. Several studies indicate that a gap exists between discourses open to immigration and practices leading to exclusion. However, this article questions the so-called 'openness' of discourses on Francophone immigration. As part of a larger ethnographic study using multiple methods, we analyzed 87 documents produced by selected governmental and non-governmen…
Enacting agency
Within research on ageing in neighbourhoods, older adults are often positioned as impacted by neighbourhood features; their impact on neighbourhoods is less often considered. Drawing on a study exploring how person and place transact to shape older adults’ social connectedness, inclusion and engagement in neighbourhoods, this paper explores how older adults take action in efforts to create neighbourhoods that meet individual and collective needs …
Governing the ageing body
Positive ageing discourses have proliferated in Western nations, forming key aspects of structured mandates for how to think about, and act towards, ageing bodies. As interpretive resources, positive ageing discourses shape how adults growing older think about themselves, their bodies and the bodies of others in relation to the process of ageing and the imperative to ‘age well’. Informed by governmentality, this paper considers how positive agein…

Constructing undesirables
Immigration policy in Canada has recently shifted, reflecting changes in other Western countries. We studied the discursive constructions of forced migrants within Bill C‐31 “Protecting Canada's Immigration System Act” and its associated Backgrounder documents published by the Canadian Government. The documents were analysed using an approach to critical discourse analysis adapted from Bacchi's (2009) methodology and informed by a theoretical fra…
Negotiating belonging following migration
A qualitative study was conducted within the Francophone minority community (FMC) of London, Ontario to explore the integration experiences of French‐speaking immigrants from visible minority groups. We address how shifts to place and identity experienced following international migration influenced the study participants' negotiation of belonging within the host community. The ethnographic approach to research was guided by a theoretical framewo…
A vision for occupational science
This paper highlights and discusses key questions for the continued development of occupational science, contending that reflexivity and dialogue addressing these questions are essential to achieve complex understandings of occupation. The questions, which relate to disciplinary identity, the relation between science and practice, relevance, interdisciplinarity and internationalization, evolved from dialogue amongst the authors who collectively w…
