Local Community Care-based Activism and Civic Engagement Among Canadian Arab Youth
Youth today are engaging in civic-oriented activities in ways that differ from previous generations. Civic engagement refers to volunteerism and service-oriented activities and programs that expand community, ground social networks, help people, and make civil society possible. We find from this study that Canadian Arab youth give considerable service back to their communities, especially within the communities of their own cultural milieu, but a…
Political participation among Canadian Arab youth
Seeking to influence the direction of government policy decision-making, many young people are politically engaged, not through voting and party membership like youth in previous decades, but rather through membership in social, environmental or identity-centered organizations, lobby groups or advocacy organizations, and online groups. In this paper, we investigate the many ways that Canadian Arab youth get involved in the formal political system…
Digital Archiving of Diasporic Cultural Productions and Transnational Citizenship of Arabs in the West
When transnationally constructed art forms, such as the works of diasporic cultural productions of Arabs in the West, are made available in open-source on a digital archive, this supports the transnational flow or exchange of citizenship-enhancing ideas, skill-sets, technologies, tools, capacities, and practices. In this theoretical investigation, we explore imagined outcomes when new audiences can engage with diasporic cultural productions of Ar…
Transnational Citizenship Mobilization among Canadian Arab Youth
In the wake of the Arab Revolutions, much has been said about the pivotal role that Arab youth played in mobilizing citizens against autocratic regimes in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Less attention has been paid to the role played by engaged transnational Arab youth during this period. Canadian Arab youth offer an excellent case study to investigate the kinds of activities that youth social movements invest in to transnationally mobi…
Transnational Citizenship Capacity-Building
Challenging statist understandings of citizenship neglectful of their own ironies, we explore the literature on circulation to argue that political actors build citizenship capacities through the transfer of various technologies, ideas, and modes of organization and by enhancing self-understanding across and within borders. This work is largely conceptual. Although we focus on transnational activist engagement with and within the Middle East, the…

Building foundations for the comparative study of state and non-state terrorism
In this article, we argue that a comparative study of state and non-state terrorism that uses the minimal foundationalist definition of terrorism as its central analytical framework offers a unique and instructive approach for answering the question: “what is terrorism?” To date, most recent comparative case study analyses of terrorism focus on ideologies, political/governance models, structural/contextual enablers, practices, organisational stru…
Established and emergent political subjectivities in circular human geographies
In this paper, we argue that Arab transnational citizenship mobilization can be configured through ‘geographies of circularity’ (e.g. bridging multiple locales, encircling the state, transversally stirring political subjectivities, and in the full-circle return of identity). Circularity helps ground and highlight the character and significance of transnational political and social activism, and the transfer of communications, skills, behaviors, o…
