Cuba in a Global Context: International Relations, Internationalism, and Transnationalism
For more than 50 years Cuba has occupied a unique position in global affairs, with a steadfast prominence that at first glance might seem unlikely for a small developing island country nestled in the Caribbean. Indeed, Cuba has long had a significant, highly active place not just in the foreground of international relations—where Cubans found themselves at the center of the three-decade Cold War geopolitical struggle between the United States and…

From Building Barriers to Bridges: Cuban Ties Across the Straits
The Cuban situation reveals how long-lasting late-adolescent formed views, grounded in lived experiences, often prove to be, and how they may maintain meaning even after people emigrate. Those experiences may be differently interpreted depending on social class as well as age. Building on the work of Mannheim, a historically grounded generational frame of analysis helps explain why Cubans initially divided deeply over the revolution, with many of…
Shared Memories, Common Vision: Generations, Sociopolitical Consciousness and Resistance among Cuban Women
Much has been written about modern Cuba's problems, but little about what it means to be part of a society that believes in 'the Revolution' and the possibility of a new order. The challenge is not only to understand why some Cubans do not believe but to also recognize the commitment of those who do. Based on how they identify key events in Cuban history, we focus on two distinct generations of Cuban women: an older 'Revolution' generation and a …
Images of Prostitution: The Prostitute and Print Media
The prostitute is a cultural icon in North America and is often romanticized in the mass media and the public imagination. The prostitute and her participation in the sex trade, however, have been subject to a number of claimsmaking campaigns, each of which attempt to define both prostitution and its practitioners in specific, often contradictory, ways. To investigate these images and themes, articles from major Canadian newspapers representing f…
The Quiet Revolution and the Sex Differential in Quebec's Suicide Rates: 1931-1986
In the context of the Quiet Revolution in Quebec during the late 1950s, this article devotes specific attention to the widening sex differential in suicide rates from 1931 to 1986. We reconceptualize sex roles and suicide in the context of modernization theory and then consider the Quebec case. We argue that the differential can be explained by the presence of varied integrating and regulating structures in society for men and women. Natural diff…
