This prospective study examined risk and protective factors in the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a sample of 83 police officers. Structured interviews were conducted in order to assess the most recent work-related traumatic event and establish diagnoses of acute stress disorder (ASD) and full or partial PTSD. Police officers were assessed between 5 and 15 days, and at 1 month, 3 months, and 12 months after the event. They…

  • Evaluation of the Dawson College shooting psychological intervention: Moving toward a multimodal extensive plan

Monique Séguin, Nadia Chawky et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2012

In 2006, following the shooting at Dawson College, the authorities implemented an intervention plan. This provided an opportunity to analyze the responses to services offered, and afforded a learning opportunity, which led to the proposal of an extensive multimodal short- and long-term psychological plan for future needs. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered 18 months after the event, involving the participation of 948 students an…

  • Discrepancies between survey and administrative data on the use of mental health services in the general population: Findings from a study conducted in Québec

Open Access•Aline Drapeau, Richard Boyer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

These findings support the hypotheses that social desirability and recall bias are likely to affect the self-reported use of mental health services in a population survey. They stress the need to refine the investigation of mental health services in population surveys and to combine survey and administrative data, whenever possible, to obtain an optimal estimation of the population need for mental health care

  • Lizardi and the Birth of the Novel in Spanish America

    Richard Boyer•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2003

Nancy Vogeley is concerned to link the era of independence with the “decolonizing discourse” that helped bring about a shift in mentality during the emergence of the Spanish American republics (p. 9). Vogeley seeks to locate opposition to the hegemonic categories, values, and assumptions of colonialism that “encroache[d] on all thought in the colony” (p. 9) through “ritual displays of authority and obedience and . . . the use of prescribed langua…

  • Loneliness in Relation to Suicide Ideation and Parasuicide: A Population‐Wide Study

    Open Access•Ariel Stravynski, Richard Boyer•ARTICLE•Suicide and Life-Threatening…•2001

Some links between loneliness and different manifestations of suicidal conduct have been reported in variety of subgroups (e.g., college students, the elderly, psychiatric patients). We tested this hypothesis by using the results of a population‐wide survey. Strong associations among suicide ideation, parasuicide and different ways of being lonely and alone, defined either subjectively (i.e., the feeling), or objectively (i.e., living alone or be…

J.-C. Among the 68% exposed. 70.4% reported multiple traumatic exposures (M = 2.6, SD = 1.67), with ratings ranging from 0 to 12. This report underlines the fact that the prevalence of traumatic events is not y…

  • Respect and Identity: Horizontal and Vertical Reference Points in Speech Acts

    Open Access•Richard Boyer•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1998•Cited by: 6•References: 10

This essay presumes the baroque texture of colonial Mexico in its multiple styles, voices, and peoples differentiated by race, ethnicity, locale, culture, place of origin, position, wealth, and clientele. It also presumes, using Marina S. Brownlee's words, a “selfreflective and distorting” tendency of baroque societies to spin off countercurrents and transpositions of dominant culture. “Profusion of detail, hierarchy, and contrast,” Irving Leonar…

The author, drawing from his close reading of Inquisition files, situates these people in the web of daily life: in families as they grow up and in communities as they learn the ways of society. With vivid glimpses of courtship, loss of virginity, marriage, adultery, abusive treatment, and failed marriage, he …
