Examining the Effects of Ambient Temperature on Pre-Term Birth in Central Australia
Preterm birth (born before 37 completed weeks of gestation) is one of the leading causes of death among children under 5 years of age. Several recent studies have examined the association between extreme temperature and preterm births, but there have been almost no such studies in arid Australia. In this paper, we explore the potential association between exposures to extreme temperatures during the last 3 weeks of pregnancy in a Central Australi…

Mutual Incomprehension
This article is set within the context of concerns about Indigenous workforce participation disadvantage. It discusses conflicting life-worlds relating to work of both Aboriginal and non- Indigenous residents in Ngukurr, a remote community in South East Arnhem Land in Australia’s Northern Territory. It contrasts an Indigenous social culture of kinship and relatedness to a Western one where employment is central to identity and its formal rules sh…
The Politics of Microeconomic Reform
This paper examines the current endeavours to render the Australian economy more economically efficient. While the case for microeconomic reform is clear in economic theory, Australian public policy analysts are less sanguine about the possibilities for its long‐term success. This paper seeks to develop the parameters of a simple general model to explain both why microeconomic reform proposals are dominant today on the Australian policy agenda an…
Informing Wilderness Policy
Over the last two decades wilderness conservation has resurfaced to become one of the most contentious issues currently on the public agenda. The “politics” of wilderness preservation has been extensively reported in the media, but academic analysis has been on a superficial level and usually by the supporters of “conservation”. This analysis has not proved particularly helpful for policy practitioners in this field
Collective Action Problems in the Regulation of Australia's Common Property Renewable Resources 1
This paper examines the Northern Prawn Fishery of Australia as an illustration of the consistent failures of systems of open (“market”?) access to common property goods. The dilemmas of collective action explain both why those occurred and substantially why subsequent regulatory intervention has not succeeded either in its stated objectives. It is argued, unfashionably, that the endemic nature of these collective action dilemmas in the fishery me…
"Why the “uncertainty"? Labor's failure to manage the “rural crisis”
(1987). Why the “uncertainty'? Labor's failure to manage the “rural crisis”. Politics: Vol. 22, No. 1, pp. 47-59
The necessity of “corporatism”
Consensual Corporatism" under the Hawke Labor Government is a process of policy decision‐making engendered both by a reaction to perceived past Labor policy‐making failures and the context of the collapse of the long post‐war economic boom. This paper argues: 1) that the perceptions of economic crisis in Australia in 1983 were accurate and that the Hawkeist consensus model was a correct (though not really corporatist) reaction to the policy requi…
