The Grammarian Cannot Wait
This article deals with the question of the nature of and scholarly approaches to studying Greek syntax in the Septuagint. The concrete point of departure is the publication of A Syntax of Septuagint Greek by T. Muraoka (Leuven: Peeters, 2016). The author discusses Muraoka’s work, while touching upon general trends in Septuagint scholarship, and reviews the book in a detailed manner. The author’s theoretical considerations are illustrated by two …

Variation and change in Greek and Latin
Latin in Egypt
This article discusses the function and character of Latin in Roman Egypt. Within the multilingual speech community of Roman Egypt the Latin language played a minor role. Greek was employed by the Romans as a spoken and written lingua franca. As far as we can judge from scattered and heterogeneous remains, the use of Latin was much more limited. Nevertheless, as a language of power and identity it had the potential to appear in many places. Its e…
Multilingualism in the Graeco-Roman Worlds
Through words and images employed both by individuals and by a range of communities across the Graeco-Roman worlds, this book explores the complexity of multilingual representations of identity. Starting with the advent of literacy in the Mediterranean, it encompasses not just the Greek and Roman empires but also the transformation of the Graeco-Roman world under Islam and within the medieval mind. By treating a range of materials, contexts, lang…
Forum the 2002–2007 us economic expansion and the limits of financeled capitalism
This issue begins by presenting a “Forum on the Financial Crisis.” The financial crisis, many commentators argue, can be traced to the deregulation of the financial system pursued by the Reagan and Clinton Administrations, then continued and deepened under the Bush Administration. Trevor Evans explores this thesis, examining the patterns of economic growth and contraction since 1980. He argues that “the economic model pursued in the United States…

Marxian and post-Keynesian theories of finance and the business cycle
This survey of Marxian writing presents an analysis of the business cycle that involves both real developments, which determine the rate of profit, and financial factors, which have an impact through the availability of credit and the rate of interest. The paper also draws on the work of recent post-Keynesians, who have developed illuminating insights into how modern capitalist financial systems function. But in contrast to the impression created…
Verbal Syntax in the Greek Pentateuch
This book, the first study of verbal syntax to address the entire Greek Pentateuch, investigates the value of these translations as evidence for the history of the Greek language. The nature and degree of Hebrew interference are assessed, including analysis of Hebrew text components underlying all Greek verbal forms in the Pentateuch. This data allows new conclusions to be drawn on natural Greek usage of aspect, tense, and mood. Their implication…

Dollar is likely to rise, fall or stay steady, experts agree
Money makes the world go round
Trevor Evans offers a useful survey of the development of the current world financial structures. He particularly emphasises the international role of the dollar and the way in which this role has constrained domestic economic management in the us and other capitalist countries. This latter discussion then leads to a consideration of the generation and transmission of economic crisis
