Early puerperal intrauterine device insertion—a preliminary report∗
From January to November 1965 Lippes loops were inserted in 304 patients prior to Postpartum Day 8. Among the first 222 patients followed there was only a 39% retention rate. It was found that the retention rate doubled when insertion was done on Day 3 or 4 or later as compared with Postpartum Day 1 or 2. Eventually 72.5% of those followed were still using the IUD; 88.1% of 271 with the later insertions retained the device. Of 28 patients who had…
