This article looks at popular responses to the zarzuela Chin-Chun-Chan and the issues that surfaced around its timely subject in early twentieth-century Mexico City. The principal source is the Mexico City satiric penny press for workers, supplemented by somewhat less polemical broadsides, both sold on the streets of the capital. Aimed mostly at working-class Mexicans, these sources offer a glimpse at popular attitudes circulating in a public sph…

    Robert M Buffington•ARTICLE•Radical History Review•2012•Cited by: 1

This essay argues that the troubled "birth" of the modern police museum in Mexico offers unique insights into the institutional uses of history as a means for fostering collective identities and social cohesion. Conventional history museums endeavor to produce sweeping historical narratives that reconstruct the forgotten past for a forgetful present-to invent traditions for societies no longer able to access the collective memories (rather than c…

  • Satan's Playground

Robert Buffington, Robert M Buffington•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2011

Reading Satan’s Playground, Paul Vanderwood’s latest history of the San Diego– Tijuana borderlands, I was struck by its unexpected resonances with Mike Davis’s City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles (Verso, 1990), one of the foundational texts of postmodern geography. City of Quartz offered up provocative readings of the great early twentieth-century southern California mythmakers — boosters, noirs, mercenaries, exiles, etc. — and t…

  • Culturas de pobreza y resistencia

Robert Buffington, Robert M Buffington•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2006

The 12 essays and the theoretical/historiographical introduction that comprise this excellent edited collection analyze popular responses to nation building in Mexico, from the beginning of the independence era until the dawn of the 1910 revolution. The essays are divided into two sections. The first contains studies of the urban poor and their resistance to vagrancy laws and other elite efforts at social control, four examining Mexico City and o…
