Workation destinations: ‘Re-Imaging’ Tourism Cities for Digital Nomads
This study highlights digital nomads and mobile remote professionals as a new target in tourism marketing strategies by analysing how three mature Spanish tourism destinations—Barcelona, Malaga, and Benidorm—promote themselves in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on qualitative analysis of multi-source empirical data, the article examines how urban marketing ‘re-images’ the tourism city for mobile remote professionals: what kind of …
Professional Interactions with Sex-Trafficked Migrant Women in Spain: Everyday Discretion, Practices, and Challenges
In Spain, multiple actors support migrant women who have experienced sex trafficking, including professionals from social work, healthcare, law enforcement, and advocacy. This study examines how these professionals translate policies of protection and control into everyday practice, examining how discretion is exercised and the factors that shape it. Drawing on 32 interviews and a street-level bureaucracy lens, the study shows that intervention l…
Moving with and against the state: Digital Nomads and Frictional Mobility Regimes
The mobile lifestyle of digital nomads mingles remote work, international travel, and multi-local living in ways that both submit to and resist state-based mobility regimes. In this article, we examine this apparent paradox by asking how digital nomads move both with the state and against it. Employing the metaphor of ‘friction’, the analytical lens of ‘governmobility’ and ethnographic fieldwork with digital nomads, the article illustrates how no…
Estancamientos paradójicos: Vidas Móviles Frente a Una Inmovilidad Forzada
Unesco action plans as dispositifs of canonisation. The woodcrafting knowledge of the Zafimaniry of Madagascar
Ethnographic accounts of the implementation and impact of safeguarding measures upon the communities of practitioners in postcolonial settings are still relatively small in number. This article reports in-depth ethnographic data on the heritagisation process and plan of action for safeguarding the woodcrafting knowledge of the Zafimaniry of Madagascar, aiming to foster an empirically grounded debate on the uses of heritage in such contexts. The s…
Digital nomads: Freedom, responsibility and the neoliberal order
A practice of togetherness: Home imaginings in the life of location-independent families
In this paper, I examine how home is imagined and socially constructed in the life of 'location-independent families' (LIFs). Location-independence is a form of lifestyle mobility based on the possibility of running an online business from anywhere in the world and the choice to homeschool the children. Through an examination of families' stories based on in depth interviews and virtual ethnography, the article explores the ways families on the m…
Shifting values of ‘primitiveness’ among the Zafimaniry of Madagascar: An anthropological approach to tourist mediators' discourses
This article studies the origins, the production and the ambivalent uses of a ‘primitive narrative' about the Zafimaniry of Madagascar. The analysis focuses on tourism mediators’ discourses and how they are challenged by the actual tourists' experiences; it is based on participant observation, interviews and web analysis. From national tour operators to local tour guides, the mediators' communicative staging of the Zafimaniry recalls and broadens…
