  • Creative placemaking and the cultural projectariat

    Open Access•Charles Umney, Graham Symon•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2020•Referências: 44

Cultural work attracts much sociological interest and is often seen as typifying 'precarity'. However, this scholarship rarely examines how 'placemaking' policy interventions affect the concrete conditions of cultural work. We study a major recent public/private policy intervention in the United Kingdom: Hull City of Culture 2017. This intervention embodied a multifaceted set of policy logics, combining the desire to boost arts participation, wit…

  • Creaming and parking in marketized employment services

    Open Access•Ian Greer, Lisa A Schulte et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2018•Citada por: 24•Referências: 38

The delivery of public services by nonprofit and for-profit providers alters the nature of services and jobs, often in unintended and undesired ways. We argue that these effects depend on the degree to which the service is ‘marketized’, that is, subjected by the funder to price-based competition. Using case studies of British and German employment services, this article scrutinizes the link between funding practices and service quality. Of partic…

  • The state and class discipline

    Open Access•Charles Umney, Ian Greer et al.•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2018•Citada por: 9•Referências: 70

This article looks at two related labour market policies that have persisted and even proliferated across Europe both before and after the financial crisis: wage restraint and punitive workfare programmes. It asks why these policies, despite their weak empirical records, have been so durable. Moving beyond comparative-institutionalist explanations which emphasise institutional stickiness, it draws on Marxist and Kaleckian ideas around the concept…

  • Insertion as an alternative to workfare

Open Access•Lisa A Schulte, Lisa Schulte et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of European Social Policy•2017•Citada por: 13•Referências: 10

Many governments have tightened the link between welfare and work by attaching conditionality to out-of-work benefits, extending these requirements to new client groups and imposing market competition and greater managerial control in service delivery – principles typically characterized as ‘workfare’. Based on field research in Seine-Saint-Denis, we examine French ‘ insertion’ schemes aimed at disadvantaged but potentially job-ready clients, cha…

  • Lifelong learning as serious leisure

    Ian Jones, Graham Symon•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2001•Citada por: 20•Referências: 30

This paper seeks to examine the extent to which post-compulsory education can be viewed as a serious leisure activity. Such links between the fields of leisure studies and adult education have yet to be fully explored, especially from a UK perspective. Although Stebbins (1998) has explored the concept of learning serious leisure through adult education, the concept of adult education as serious leisure has yet to be examined. Since 1995 successiv…
