Aesthetic Experience, Film Comedy and Suffering in Sullivan’s Travels
This article examines the way aesthetic experience is represented in contrast to direct experience in Preston Sturges’s film Sullivan’s Travels (1941). The film portrays the efforts of a successful Hollywood film director to acquire the experience of suffering in order to make a film with social significance. The film suggests a contrast between lived experience and aesthetic experience in conveying a political message and social knowledge. Frame…
Egalitarian Education and the Skeptical Pedagogue
There are striking similarities between Jacques Rancière's treatment of the pedagogue in The Ignorant Schoolmaster and Stanley Cavell's treatment of the skeptical instructor in the second chapter of Conditions Handsome and Unhandsome . In this article, I argue that this pairing highlights the ways in which both Rancière and Cavell approach the figure I call the skeptical pedagogue. They share the term “stultification” for the effect of this figur…

That Riddle of a River
Boolean trust in levels of government
Unexpected and often severe weather has taxed community capacities. Convincing households to prepare by developing emergency plans, keeping necessary supplies, and investing in home upgrades, to name a few, has been a focus of many public campaigns related to extreme weather. Essentially, these programmes are exercises in persuasion. What, then, characterises such a campaign that is likely to be successful in this act of persuasion? Recent work h…
The Experience of Active Representation in South Korea
A long research tradition has argued that representative public servants regularly advocate for the interests of clients like themselves—whether similarity is based on race, ethnicity, or gender. This article broadens the representative bureaucracy literature to explore a different basis for advocacy (marriage-based immigrant status) using unique qualitative data. To explore the experience of representation from the perspective of public servants…

A Micro Model of Problem Definition and Policy Choice
Past research on problem definition and public policy primarily focuses on the macro‐system level. In this study, we propose a micro model of problem definition and policy choice at the individual level. We argue that while individual citizens' problem definitions and policy preferences are rooted in and filtered through their predisposition characteristics (such as socioeconomic status, political orientation, and informational base), their polic…

Public Problem Characterization, Policy Solution Generation, and Intra‐Agenda Connectivity
While policy agenda studies have extensively examined the interplays of various venues, one under‐explored area is the internal dynamics within an agenda venue. In this study, we focus on one of the important venues—news media—and investigate the inherent connections between how a public problem is characterized and how problem solutions are generated in media agenda setting. Drawing on agenda‐setting theories, we develop a typology to theorize t…
A Lingering Question of Priorities
Many organization theories suggest that divergent goals can hamper an organization's pursuit of its primary mission. An earlier version of this article analyzed the effect of the pursuit of divergent goals on American public schools. This is an update of the original article that adds two years of data to the original study. Using an educational production function, this article assesses the relationships between athletic budgets and various aggr…
