  • Technologies and policies to decarbonize global industry: Review and assessment of mitigation drivers through 2070

Open Access•Jeffrey Rissman, Chris Bataille et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Energy•2020

Fully decarbonizing global industry is essential to achieving climate stabilization, and reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050–2070 is necessary to limit global warming to 2 °C. This paper assembles and evaluates technical and policy interventions, both on the supply side and on the demand side. It identifies measures that, employed together, can achieve net zero industrial emissions in the required timeframe. Key supply-side technol…

  • Tone Works, Somerset: Machinery and Power in the Serge Industry

    Mike Williams•ARTICLE•Industrial Archaeology Review•2016

This paper summarises a detailed investigation of the well-preserved machinery at Tone Works in 2007. The site was photographed by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England in the mid-1990s, and was included in the English Heritage South-West textile mills project, but it was not accessible for measured survey until after it ceased working in 1999. At that time the level of preservation of its mechanical features was exceptional…

  • Nation, Culture and Identity in a French-Language Corsican Newspaper

Jill Eileen Richardson, Stephen Huckerby et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism Studies•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This article presents data from a small-scale empirical research project examining the relationship(s) between language, identity and journalism on Corsica. Focusing on Corse-Matin, a local newspaper bought daily by over 20 per cent of the island's population, the article draws on two research methods. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted with head and regional editors as well as journalists serving key towns and districts on the isla…

  • Discursive Democracy and New Labour: Five Ways in Which Decision-Makers Manage Citizen Agendas in Public Participation Initiatives

    Open Access•Mike Williams•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2004•Cited by: 5•References: 18

New Labour's conceptualisation of public participation in local government creates a tension in public participation practice. Government legislation and guidance require local authorities to develop and provide citizen-centred services, engage the public in policy-making and respond to the public's views. Seen in this light, New Labour policy draws from radical democratic discourse. However, local authority staff are also expected to act in acco…

  • The Problem of Representation: Realism and Operationalism in Survey Research

    Open Access•Malcolm Williams, Mike Williams•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2003•Cited by: 7•References: 10

This paper is concerned with the question of representation in survey research, specifically in respect of the operationalisation of variables. In sociology, empiricist explanations of the social world are largely discredited and some form of realism is now commonly favoured by researchers. Here I will argue that whilst realism has made theoretical progress in sociology, in survey research there has been an unfortunate accommodation between empir…

  • Growing Metaphors: The Agricultural Cycle as Metaphor in the Later Prehistoric Period of Britain and North-Western Europe

    Open Access•Mike Williams•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Archaeology•2003•Cited by: 18•References: 55

By reviewing the theory of metaphor, it can be shown how metaphors need not solely be linguistic but can include actions and objects. This allows for metaphors to be found and recognized in the archaeological record. Furthermore, some metaphors can be so pervasive and all-encompassing that they can determine the way people think and understand their world. During the later prehistoric period in Britain and north-western Europe, this article sugge…

  • Havelock Mill, Manchester: A case-study in the emergency recording of a large urban mill complex

    Mike Williams•ARTICLE•Industrial Archaeology Review•1993

The early nineteenth century textile industry in Manchester is best known for its large steam-powered 'town mills', usually built in closely-packed groups alongside the canals, and for the local dominance of the cotton trade. Havelock Mill illustrates the size and complexity of these buildings but is distinguished because it incorporates the city's last intact silk mill. Documentary research and comparison with silk mills in other areas indicates…
