  • Toward Fortress Capitalism: The Restrictive Transformation of Migration and Border Regimes as a Reaction to the Capitalist Multicrisis

    Open Access•Fabian Georgi•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•2019•Cited by: 14•References: 17

The article develops the concept of "fortress capitalism." The concept has two dimensions. First, it describes those elements within today's migration and border regimes that aim to control the mobility of the global working class in repressive ways. Second, it designates a dystopian future scenario, in which these repressive elements have massively expanded. Such a formation might develop as part of a twenty-first-century fascism. Based on histo…

  • Widersprüche im langen Sommer der Migration: Ansätze einer materialistischen Grenzregimeanalye

    Fabian Georgi•ARTICLE•PROKLA Zeitschrift für kritische…•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 1

Today, the analysis of migration and migration policy from a perspective of critical political economy is necessary, because of the dramatic conflicts surrounding the so-called “refugee crisis” of 2015/2016, but also because explicitly materialist analyses of these issues have been marginalized for years, with problematic effects. Open Access•John Kannankulam, Fabian Georgi•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 21

Our article focuses on a question that is at the core of comparative capitalisms (CC) scholarship and historical materialist state theory: What is an appropriate theory of institutions in capitalism? How can we conceptualise institutions in relation to the fundamental contradictions and power relations of capitalism? Starting from the social foundations of institutions, the aim of this article is to show how institutional complementarity and inst…

  • For the Benefit of Some: The International Organization for Migration and its Global Migration Management

    Open Access•Fabian Georgi•CHAPTER•Politics of International…•2010

On 8 August 2003 a few hundred activists of the Sixth Anti-racist Border Camp in Germany made their way from their tents in the Rhine meadows in Cologne to nearby Bonn. Here they demonstrated in front of the office of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an intergovernmental organization with 127 member states and an annual budget of more than 1 billion US Dollars (USD) in 2008. Its central motto is ‘Managing Migration for the Bene…
