    Open Access•Michael Gismondi, Jeremy Mouat•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This article will argue that a seemingly trivial dispute between the Nicaraguan government and an American lumber company operating on Nicaragua's Mosquito Coast escalated to become a major source of tension between the U.S. State Department and Nicaragua, as well as a catalyst that drew U.S. banks into Nicaragua. Despite its significance, the convoluted story of this dispute has attracted little scholarly attention. The importance of the Emery c…

Open Access•Michael Gismondi, Jeremy Mouat•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American Studies•2002•Cited by: 2

This article reassesses the influence of American business on US foreign policy towards Nicaragua, 1893-1912. It describes three episodes that involved American interests in Nicaragua - the Reyes uprising of 1899, the Emery claim of 1903-1909, and the US & Nicaragua Mining Company claim of 1908-1912 - as evidence for a different interpretation of US policy, one which stresses how the influence and material interests of American 'men on the spot' …

  • Sociology and Environmental Impact Assessment

    Open Access•Michael Gismondi•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•1997•Cited by: 3

The paper indicates how a critical sociology could contribute to environmental impact assessment (EIA). It argues how sociologists must become involved in evaluating the EIA process itself. Topics examined include: how EIA excludes and frames social issues; why social science should precede natural science; the social construction of impact science; bias and the circulation of EIA consultants; and fairness when talking in public hearings. The aut…

    Michael Gismondi, Joan Sherman•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•1996•References: 3

As more countries, industries, and international agencies respond to environmental concerns, their representatives look to nations like Canada for expertise in environmental assessment, policy, and standards, and for techniques to assist them in identifying and predicting the impacts of proposed projects on the biogeophysical environment and on human health and well-being. Often the expertise of environmental specialists and the environmental imp…

  • The Idea of Resistance: Dependency as Historical Process

    Open Access•Michael Gismondi•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•1988•References: 18

This essay engages two issues: (1) the possibility of a theory of dependence that accounts for resistance and accords resistance by social agents causal significance in historical processes; and (2) the importance of culture in the resistance to social change offered by social actors. I understand dependent development as an historical process that subaltern classes resist and shape in their resisting. The practical consequence of resistance is t…

    Open Access•Michael Gismondi•ARTICLE•Social Compass•1988•Cited by: 2

  • Transformations in the Holy Religious Resistance and Hegemonic Struggles in the Nicaraguan Revolution

Theology, as an intellectual attempt of religious people to make sense of their chaotic times, is always politically partisan. From religious discourses oriented toward transcendent goals, social and political insights flow-injecting themselves into political struggles, legitimating some, delegitimating others, often lending the weight of sacred discourse to in the name of Christian nonpartisanship. • The gift of theory’: A critique of the histoire des mentalités

    Michael Gismondi, Michael A Gismondi•ARTICLE•Social History•1985•Cited by: 5•References: 15

The histoire des mentalite's represents, for some historians, the new approach to illuminating the role of the common people in history. For some time the innovations of this approach in conceiving time, space, ritual and popular culture have enjoyed acceptance from those social historians keen to recover the everyday life of the lower orders through histories of the family, the mob, riots, women, sexuality and even death. Taking an interdiscipli…
