  • Assessing modern climatic controls on Southern Sierra Nevada precipitation and speleothem δ 18 O

    Open Access•Staryl McCabe-Glynn, Kathleen R Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2015

  • Pacific ocean sea surface temperature influence on southwestern United States climate during the past millennium: New evidence from a well-calibrated, high-resolution stalagmite δ18O record from the S…

  • Δ 14 C and Δ 13 C of Seawater DIC as Tracers of Coastal Upwelling: A 5-Year Time Series from Southern California

    Open Access•Guaciara M Santos, Julie Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Marine radiocarbon ( 14 C) is a widely used tracer of past ocean circulation, but very few high-resolution records have been obtained. Here, we report a time series of carbon isotope abundances of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in surface seawater collected from the Newport Beach pier in Orange County, within the Southern California Bight, from 2005 to 2010. Surface seawater was collected bimonthly and analyzed for Δ 14 C, δ 13 C, and salinity.…

  • A Test of Climate, Sun, and Culture Relationships from an 1810-Year Chinese Cave Record

Open Access•Pingzhong Zhang, Hai Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2008

A record from Wanxiang Cave, China, characterizes Asian Monsoon (AM) history over the past 1810 years. The summer monsoon correlates with solar variability, Northern Hemisphere and Chinese temperature, Alpine glacial retreat, and Chinese cultural changes. It was generally strong during Europe's Medieval Warm Period and weak during Europe's Little Ice Age, as well as during the final decades of the Tang, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties, all times that we…

  • Quantification of Holocene Asian monsoon rainfall from spatially separated cave records

Open Access•Chaoyong Hu, Gideon M Henderson et al.•ARTICLE•Earth and Planetary Science Letters•2008

  • General characteristics of temperature variation in China during the last two millennia

Open Access•Bao Yang, Achim Braeuning et al.•ARTICLE•Geophysical Research Letters•2002

Three alternate China‐wide temperature composites covering the last 2000 years were established by combining multiple paleoclimate proxy records obtained from ice cores, tree rings, lake sediments and historical documents. Five periods of temperature variation can be identified: a warm stage in AD 0–240, a cold interval between AD 240 and 800, a return to warm conditions from AD 800–1400, including the Medieval Warm Period between AD 800–1100, th…

  • Do They Hear You When You Cry

Kathleen R Johnson, Fauziya Kassindja et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2002

The story of Fauziya Kassindja, who fled her African homeland to escape female genital mutilation and forced polygamy. Fauziya's progressive father had shielded her from the tribal practice of polygamy and female genital mutilation in Togo, Africa, but when he died in 1993, everything changed. At the age of 17, she was forced to marry a much older man who already had three wives, and to undergo preparation for female genital mutilation without an…

  • The Ambiguous Terrain of Petkeeping in Children's Realistic Animal Stories

    Kathleen R Johnson•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•1996•Cited by: 4•References: 2

A content analysis of 48 children's realistic animal stories shows an emphasis on pets and petkeeping that can both challenge and support traditional human-animal boundaries. The genre's sympathetic portrayal of pet animals and the condemnation of theirmistreatment invite the reader to challenge such boundaries. Yet the genre's stereotypical portrayal of these animals also constrains our conceptualization of the human-animal bond. The author disc…
