This paper describes a collaborative project on building citizenship among adolescents and young people in Gujarat, western India, and describes lessons learned from its approaches and strategies. With capacity and trust building, NGOs supporting community based collectives to monitor health services and engage with health providers and local authorities, over time overcame implementation challenges to strengthen public sector services. Health planning is generally considered a technical subject, primarily the domain of health officials with minimal involvement of community representatives. Men's involvement in the health of women and children is considered an important avenue for addressing gender influences on maternal and newborn health. The impact of male involvement around the time of childbirth on maternal and newborn health outcomes was examined as one part of a systematic review of maternal health intervention studies published between 2000 and 2012. A Feminist, Gender and Rights Perspective for Evaluation of Women’s Health Programmes
This article discusses the evaluation practice of a women’s health advocate who learnt lessons about evaluation of health programmes from the experience of being evaluated. In turn, the author lays out the principles that she tries to follow while undertaking evaluations, namely, her concept of women’s health and the values and ethical principles that guide her practice.
