    Martha Mcmahon•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2020•References: 18

This is a story about how sheep's lives were entangled with political struggles to resist dominant ontologies of capitalism and the nation state. By approaching the paper's problematic in terms of interacting agency, rather than a world of separate objects, the ecofeminist materialism developed here challenges the ontologies embedded in political, economic and regulatory modes that separate humans from the more-than-human

  • Introduction

Ellie Perkins, Edith Kuiper et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 45

These Explorations argue that more links between the fields of feminist ecology and feminist economics are both needed and promising, and presents new, boundary-crossing research in this area. It brings together contributions from various regions in the world that link political action and experience in practice and research in an economic theorizing that includes both environmental and feminist concerns

  • Making Social Change

    Open Access•Martha Mcmahon, Ellen Pence•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2003•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The arrest of large numbers of women under laws originally designed to protect them from male violence tells us very little about women’s use of violence against their intimate partners. However, it does tell us about the difficulties of organizing to protect women from violence and about some of the unanticipated challenges of engaging the legal and criminal justice systems as ways of protecting women from violence. The authors offer strategies …

  • Rock-a-by Baby

    Martha Mcmahon, Verta Taylor•REVIEW•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1997•Cited by: 1

Although self-help has been an integral strategy of the women's movement, the burgeoning self-help publishing industry and growing popularity of talk shows encouraging personal confession have provoked vicious attacks on self-help from many feminists. Rock-a-By Baby examines the postpartum depression support group movement and exploring the relationship between gender, the ideas and strategies of women's self-help groups and feminism. Taylor uses…

  • For Richer, For Poorer

    Martha Mcmahon, Demie Kurz•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1996

For Richer, For Poorer provides a new perspective on the impact of divorce on women. Based on interviews with a random sample of divorced mothers, this book identifies their real concerns: inadequate resources from their ex-husbands and the state, and unequal social policies. Presenting accounts of how they manage the divorce process, divorced women of diverse background describe their attempts to rebuild their own lives and those of their famili…

  • Significant Absences

    Open Access•Martha Mcmahon•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•1996•Cited by: 11•References: 6

This article looks at how research accounts can conceal stories about the experiences of those who do not appear to be present in the research project. Some of these hidden selves or shadow others in research may be called "significantly absent" because their invisi bility holds particular significance for the sorts of research stories researchers tell. Recognizing these absent others stretches these stories beyond the temporal, spatial, and conc…

  • Privileging Fieldwork Over Interviews

    Open Access•Sherryl Kleinman, Barbara Stenro et al.•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•1994•Cited by: 13•References: 13

Qualitative sociologists typically privilege fieldwork over interviews. What happens to fieldworkers who now ask questions but no longer hang out? What about those who rely exclusively on intensive interviewing while participant observation remains the standard? The authors examine the negative consequences of privileging fieldwork for identity and practice, the unique contributions of in-depth interviewing, and the differences in the tales that …
