“I Can’t Imagine / A Kinder Set-up”
Recently, a previously unknown private collection of correspondence by the British-American poet W. H. Auden (1907-1973) surfaced in Austria. The approximately 90 letters and postcards are addressed to Hugo Kurka, Auden's lover and friend during the poet's Austrian period 1958-1973. The investigation of these papers is contextualized through archival research in Austria and the United States that includes Auden's correspondence to his closest fri…
“I have read a great deal, and written a little”
The papers of Benjamin Disraeli in the Bodleian Library contain a remarkable sequence of letters by a young woman from Vienna: the writer, translator, and journalist Bettina Wirth (1849–1926). Sent to Disraeli between 1879 and 1881, they are fascinating documents that are more than just a record of ardent hero-worship and romantic projection. They offer revealing insights not only into the gendered dynamics of fandom and cultural mediation but al…
‘To Bring Them into Dialog’
This conversation, which originally formed part of the two-day workshop-and-conference “Life Narrative and the Digital 2023” at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, brings together historians, literary and auto/biography scholars, and digital humanists to address the intersections of life-narrative scholarship and digital humanities. They offer different disciplinary perspectives on the possibilities and challenges posed by the increasing …
Life Narrative and the Digital
This cluster emerged from a two-day international workshop and conference, “Life Narrative and the Digital 2023”, which took place at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in September 2023, and which was aimed at stimulating a conversation on the ‘possibilities, uses, and challenges of digital methods and technologies for auto/biographical research and practice.’ The contributions assembled in this cluster continue, and in many ways intensify, such a…
Writer, Work, and World(s)
Introduction
This cluster took off from an interdisciplinary and international workshop hosted at the University of Vienna in May 2022. Some of the original contributors turned their presentations into articles for this cluster; other articles were recruited later on. The original idea for both the workshop and cluster was inspired by the UK’s Refugee Tales project, founded and organized by David Herd and Anna Pincus. Some of the articles collected here discu…
Decentring the Author
This article focuses on collaborative life-storytelling as a tool of socio-political literary activism in the context of the Refugee Tales project. It argues that Refugee Tales is unique: on the one hand, it capitalizes on the cultural authority and ‘attention capital’ (Van Krieken) of well-known writers who offer a scathing critique of the UK asylum system; on the other hand, the project deconstructs this authority through collaboratively-author…

Making Mischief
This article examines the fashioning of the authorial persona of British playwright, screenwriter, and director David Hare through autobiographically inflected extra-theatrical interventions. Both exploratory and explanatory companion pieces that frame his artistic work, Hare’s lectures, essays, and memoir capture and stage the field migrations between art and activism that lie at the heart of his public profile as a politically engaged celebrity…
Theatre and Persona
Theatre, with its focus on live performance and the particular interest it places on the performer as creative agent, undoubtedly brings a distinctive set of enriching perspectives to the field of persona studies, which has often acknowledged its debt to performance studies and theories of performativity (see, for instance, Marshall & Barbour 2015). Despite some notable forays into the area of persona and (live) artistic performance made by schol…
Life Writing and Celebrity
The introduction to this special issue on ‘Life Writing and Celebrity’ outlines the numerous shared concerns of life-writing scholarship and celebrity studies as two of the currently most vibrant fields of cross-disciplinary Humanities research. Providing summaries of the individual contributions and highlighting the connections between them, it points towards the valuable insights to be gained from initiating a more rigorous theoretical and meth…
Introduction
In 2015, the Irish Marriage Equality Referendum campaign found a fiercely outspoken advocate in the internationally award-winning Irish novelist and essayist Colm Toibin. Throwing his full weight b
Portraits of the Artist as Politician, the Politician as Artist
This article examines the reception of Benjamin Disraeli as a bestselling novelist and respectable elder statesman as reflected in obituaries and biographical sketches appearing in the wake of his death in 1881. It starts out by tracing Disraeli’s entry into the popular imagination during his lifetime before focusing on the intersections of literary and political fame in late nineteenth-century commemorations. Disraeli’s posthumous media receptio…
