  • Materializing the virtual? Post-digital intimacy and women players of otome video games in China

Open Access•Longlong Ge, Tingting Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Culture•2026

This article challenges the dematerialization bias in digital intimacy studies and the sociological assumption that digital capitalism dissolves social bonds (alienation) by examining how Chinese female otome video game players materialize and embody their virtual relationships in their everyday life. While there is a rich literature on screen-based interactions, this study uses a multi-sited ethnography (2021–2024), including 106 participant int…

  • Acm-GNN: Adaptive Cluster-Oriented Modularity Graph Neural Network for EEG Depression Detection

Open Access•Tong Zhang, Tingting Hu et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Computational…•2026

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is typically accompanied by varying topological dynamics across brain network modularity due to the influence of time-variant and subject-specific factors. Current works primarily characterize the electroencephalograms (EEG) topological relationships based on prior predefined brain regions. However, this predefined strategy cannot dynamically fit to different individuals, which may affect the adaptability of unseen…

  • Research on the cross-campus unsafe cycling behavior of university students based on cycling habits and risk perception

Open Access•Yingjie Wu, Tingting Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Cross-campus cycling among university students is increasingly common, yet unsafe cycling behaviors pose significant safety risks. Existing studies have rarely examined the combined roles of cycling habits and risk perception within a unified theoretical framework. This study aims to investigate the influencing mechanisms of unsafe cycling behavior among cross-campus university students based on an extended social-psychological model. An improved…

Employing a large sample of 1,206 listed companies in China from 2012 to 2021, this study applies the fixed-effect panel regression to validate the relationship between R&D expenditure and the proportion of foreign sales to total sales. Further, the results are also checked for robustness using 2SLS instrument…

  • Affective liquidity, synthetic bonds: VTubers as posthuman mediators of digital intimacies

    Open Access•Tingting Hu, Longlong Ge•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2025•References: 16

This study explores how VTubers, or virtual YouTubers, redefine digital intimacy by blending human performance with digital artifice. Through a 9-month digital ethnography and 21 interviews with VTuber fans, we identified two key processes. First, the affective liquidity of VTuber personas, facilitated by vocal modulation, avatar aesthetics, and technology, blurs ontological lines between human/non-human and real/virtual. Second, the screen acts …

  • Graded phonological neighborhood effects on lexical retrieval: Evidence from Mandarin Chinese

Open Access•Luan Li, Tingting Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Memory and Language•2024

How phonological neighborhood affects lexical retrieval can shed important light on lexical organization and processing. Yet these effects are unclear, particularly in Mandarin Chinese. This is likely because the working definition of phonological neighbors (i.e., the one-phoneme edit rule) used in Indo-European languages inadequately characterizes the phonological similarity among Mandarin words, which have simpler syllable structures and lexica…

    Tingting Hu•ARTICLE•Film International•2024

This article views the Three Gorges Dam as the moment of stasis brought to the century-long daily practices of Chinese people on its historically enriched land. Through Jia Zhangke’s visual poetics in Still Life , this stasis presents us with the gently emotional and minute quotidian details of lives on the brim of unprecedented change, whose uprootedness and estrangements too embody their power of agency to this massive alteration brought about …

Open Access•Tingting Hu, Chenchen Zou et al.•ARTICLE•Transformative Works and Cultures•2023

The emergent movement of reverse Sue (Nisu) in China refers to the practice of (especially female) fans imagining themselves as having a strong male role to their idols' weak female role. In this process, female fans take on a powerful, active role to protect and look after their male idols in female form. Examining how Nisu fans interact with other types of fans and negotiate a mainstream gender discourse dominated by traditional heterosexual no…

It examines the patriotic discourses in popular Chinese animated series Year Hare Affair and presents three main findings. First, that the series characters represent…

    Open Access•Jieming Zhu, Tingting Hu•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2009•Cited by: 26•References: 25

Land development for nonagricultural uses in China's periurban areas has been driven by the rapid urbanization which has made the areas an intense mixture of urban and rural activities. The taking of land-rent differentials derived from land-use change is also a strong driving force for land conversion. In addition to formal land developments, informal and quasi-formal land developments have been induced by the institution of incomplete and ambig…
