  • Datos sobre el peso al nacer en países en desarrollo

    Open Access•J Ties Boerma, K I Weinstein et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1998

The main source of data on birth weight in developing countries is statistics from health facilities, although most developing countries do not produce annual estimates of the incidence of low birth weight from these data. Such estimates would be subject to selection bias as the data are usually limited to babies born within health facilities, and therefore are representative of a subgroup that is markedly different from the overall population of…

  • Household structure and childhood immunization in Niger and Nigeria

    Open Access•Anastasia J Gage, Alf Sommerfelt et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1997•Cited by: 11•References: 21

In this study, we use data from the Demographic and Health Surveys to examine the relationship between household structure and childhood immunization in Niger and Nigeria. We show that household structure is an important determinant of childhood immunization in Nigeria: Children from nuclear, elementary polygynous, and three-generational households are worse-off than those from laterally extended households. However, the lower odds of full immuni…

  • Linguistic Structures and the Structures of Social Groups

    Open Access•Alf Sommerfelt•ARTICLE•Diogenes•1965

Antoine Meillet demonstrated in 1906 that language corresponds exactly to the definition of a social fact. "Language is... eminently a social fact." In effect, this is explicitly implied in the definition proposed by Durkheim. A language exists independently of the individuals who speak it, and although it has no reality outside the sum of these individuals, it is nevertheless, due to its general character, exterior to each of them, thus proving …

  • Recent Trends in General Linguistics

    Open Access•Alf Sommerfelt•ARTICLE•Diogenes•1953•Cited by: 1

The importance of language for the real understanding of culture is being more and more felt by most students of civilisation. A linguistic system is an expression, though not a complete one, of the system of perception which a social group has of its surroundings and of itself. No civilisation can be fully understood by one who ignores its linguistic means of expression. Modern anthropologists cannot work any more through interpreters if they wa…
