Evoking Huntington: Albania’s Democratic Transition and the Revival of Religious Freedom
After nearly half a century of totalitarian atheism, Albania’s transition to democracy in 1991 represented one of the most complex transformations in post-communist Eastern Europe. Framed within Samuel Huntington’s ‘third wave’ of democratization, this study revisits Albania’s early years of political transition to analyze the intertwined processes of democratic change and religious revival. The aim of this research is to understand how U.S. fore…

Neither “bourgeois” nor “communist” science: Sociology in communist and post-communist Albania
In most parts of communist Eastern Europe there has been some tradition of sociology. This was not the case in Albania where sociology was totally excluded from the university curriculum, as well as from the foci of scientific research, during the years of communist authoritarian rule. The beginning of the democratic movement in Albania in 1990 that was followed by the establishment of a multiparty system and the first free elections in 1991 rais…
War Versus Ghosts: Children's Fears in Different Societies
Several studies have shown that one of the main worries among schoolchildren everywhere is the fear of war and nuclear weapons. The present work is an attempt to investigate whether this holds true for Albanian children, whose country is actually politically unstable and potentially threatened by war. We asked 435 Albanian and 265 Swedish children to name their greatest fears. While the results for the Swedish sample paralleled the findings of ot…
Overcoming the past: De-communization and reconstruction of post-communist societies
Albania's Road from Communism: Political and Social Change, 1990-1993
Until the late 1980s, Albania was one of the least known countries in the world and virtually inaccessible to foreigners. Most studies on Eastern Europe lacked reliable and complete information about Albania; it was usually either mentioned as the smallest and the least developed country of Europe or totally ignored. For their part, Albanian scholars have made little contribution, if any, to analysing their society under Hoxha's Communist regime.…
Working conditions, work style, and job satisfaction among Albanian teachers
Linking economic hardship to families' lives and children's psychological well-being
This study is part of a longitudinal project to investigate the impact of economic crises on families and children from different cultural, social, and economic back grounds than those from industrialized countries in other studies. We collected data from 189 Albanian children and their parents. Albania is said to be Europe's poorest country, with a prevailing rural structure, where traditional life-styles are main tained even in urban areas. Con…
