  • Debating Emerging Adulthood: Stage or Process?

Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, Marion Kloep et al.•BOOK•Debating Emerging Adulthood•2011

The transition from adolescence to adulthood has undergone significant changes in recent decades. Unlike a half-century ago, when young people in industrialized countries moved from adolescence into young adulthood in relatively short order at around age 20, now the decade from the late teens to the late twenties is seen as an extended time of self-focused exploration and education in pursuit of optimally fulfilling relationships and careers. Rec…

  • How universal is emerging adulthood? An empirical example

    Leo B Hendry, Marion Kloep•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2010•Cited by: 27•References: 2

This paper examined the concept of emerging adulthood as proposed by Arnett, in a purposive sample of Welsh young people (n=38) aged 17–20 years who were working or unemployed (i.e. not in higher education). In this exploratory study, young people were questioned about their lifestyles and their perceptions of 'being adult' in semi-structured interviews lasting about 40 minutes. Results indicated that Arnett's emerging adulthood stage held good f…

  • Young people's views of their present and future selves in two deprived communities

    Open Access•Marion Kloep, Leo B Hendry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 2

This study set out to explore the perceptions of young people from two deprived former mining communities in South Wales about their present and future selves. An opportunity sample of 11 teenagers was asked to describe a normal and an ideal day in their lives. Interview transcripts were submitted to a theory‐led analysis to gauge the components of young people's selves and their hopes and fears of the future. Findings indicated diversity in the …

  • Conceptualizing Emerging Adulthood: Inspecting the Emperor’s New Clothes?

    Open Access•Leo B Hendry, Marion Kloep•ARTICLE•Child Development Perspectives•2007

Jeffrey Arnett’s concept of emerging adulthood is critically examined by reviewing and evaluating elements of its theoretical framework and by referring to relevant empirical studies, which support the major arguments presented. Several limitations to Arnett’s model are found and an alternative perspective is offered that might complement his stage theory and provide a stronger theoretical baseline for future research.

  • Belonging or Opposing? A Grounded Theory Approach to Young People's Cultural Identity in a Majority/Minority Societal Context

Leo B Hendry, Peter Mayer et al.•ARTICLE•Identity•2007

The present article takes a grounded theory approach in exploring the perceptions of young people about the development of their cultural identity in a setting where they are a geographic majority but a minority population in the wider society. Responses to an essay competition and a series of focus group and individual interviews with teenagers provide the narratives, which are analysed by the authors. Findings reveal a variety of inter-related …

  • Adult control and adolescent challenge? Dilemmas and paradoxes in young people's leisure

    Marion Kloep, Leo B Hendry•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 5

From the perspective of the Lifespan Model of Developmental Challenge (Hendry & Kloep, 2002), this paper explores the apparent paradoxes between the ideology of protection provided by adult society as part of youth socialization, and young peoples' perceptions of control, challenge and boredom. By caring too much, forever-organizing and over-structuring adolescents' leisure, adults destroy important learning opportunities. Adults often fail to em…

  • Peripheral Visions? A Cross-cultural Study of Rural Youths' Views on Migration

    Marion Kloep, Leo B Hendry et al.•ARTICLE•Children s Geographies•2003•Cited by: 16

This study sets out to investigate anticipatory views concerning out-migration amongst rural youth. Utilising three age-group samples from rural Norway, Scotland and Sweden, young people were classified as prospective 'stayers', 'leavers' or 'returners'. Both qualitative and quantitative data show that 'stayers' see themselves as most contented with rurality. 'Leavers' are most negative to rural living. 'Returners', though also critical about rur…

  • Rural Communities and Well-Being: A Good Place to Grow Up

    Open Access•Anthony Glendinning, Mark Nuttall et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2003•Cited by: 25•References: 17

This study looks at young people's accounts of life in communities in rural northern Scotland, and considers in what ways affective and social aspects of community are bound up with well-being, over and above young people's concerns for the future, rural youth transitions, and out-migration. Interviews were held with 15-18 year-olds in four study areas (16 groups, N = 60+) and a parallel survey of 11-16 year-olds was conducted in eight study area…

  • Young People Talking About Adolescent Rural Crowds and Social Settings

Leo B Hendry, Marion Kloep et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 5

The present paper sets out to examine rural young people's views of crowds and social settings, and to gauge adolescents' perceptions of adults' attitudes towards them in rural townships. Seventy-three young men and women aged 15/16 and 17/18 years were interviewed in friendship focus groups in five selected rural contexts in northern Scotland. Findings showed that the groups in the study regarded themselves as 'normal' in their dress, interests …

  • Leisure transitions - a rural perspective

    Leo B Hendry, Marion Kloep et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 11

The paper examines leisure focal theory from a cross-cultural perspective by utilizing adolescent samples from rural Norway, Scotland and Sweden. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to explore the robustness of the model across countries. Results revealed effects of both culture and rurality on the patterns of adolescents' leisure transitions, and these were discussed in relation to the original theoretical framework

  • Youth, Lifestyles and Society: A Class Issue

    Open Access•Leo B Hendry, Marion Kloep et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 11

This article sets out to consider the role of social class on present-day adolescents' development by briefly examining adolescents' `lifestyles' in western industrial societies. The article goes on to consider empirical evidence about possible social class influences on various aspects of adolescent socialization in Sweden, Germany and Britain within Abel and McQueen's theoretical framework of `resources', `orientations' and `behaviours'. In par…

  • War Versus Ghosts: Children's Fears in Different Societies

    Open Access•Fatos Tarifa, Marion Kloep•ARTICLE•Childhood•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Several studies have shown that one of the main worries among schoolchildren everywhere is the fear of war and nuclear weapons. The present work is an attempt to investigate whether this holds true for Albanian children, whose country is actually politically unstable and potentially threatened by war. We asked 435 Albanian and 265 Swedish children to name their greatest fears. While the results for the Swedish sample paralleled the findings of ot…

This study is part of a longitudinal project to investigate the impact of economic crises on families and children from different cultural, social, and economic back grounds than those from industrialized countries in other studies. We collected data from 189 Albanian children and their parents. Albania is said to be Europe's poorest country, with a prevailing rural structure, where traditional life-styles are main tained even in urban areas. Con…
