Living apart together: Growing Up in Transnational Families
Making Friends as Interactional Work: Young Refugees in Germany
This article focuses on the friendships that young refugees make in Germany as their country of arrival. Although friends are highly relevant in children's lives, little attention has been paid to this subject regarding young refugees. We conducted ego-network interviews with 17 young refugees aged 9-15, with which we explored the opportunity structures in which young refugees choose their friends and their ways of establishing and deepening frie…
The Needs and Requirements of People with Disabilities for Frequent Movement in Cities: Insights from Qualitative and Quantitative Data of the TRIPS Project
Moving is an indispensable component of travelling. This paper discusses the experiences of persons with disabilities when moving around cities on foot or wheels, based on research conducted during the EU-funded project TRIPS. Findings comprise participants’ vignettes from 49 interviews in seven European cities, views on smart assistive technologies (e.g., Augmented Reality) from a pan-European quantitative survey, and design concepts related to …
Good childhood”: Children’s perception and evaluation of transnational families
In public debates, transnational families are portrayed as a deviation from the norm of "good childhood." In Europe, this is emphasized by the term "Euro-orphans," branding parents' (especially mothers') absence as a violation and scandalizing it. Children's voices are rarely heard in public discourse, and although research is now turning its attention to the "stayer children," they and their perspectives on transnational family life remain under…
Pilot Study to Assess the Feasibility of a Mobile Unit for Remote Cognitive Screening of Isolated Elderly in Rural Areas
A mobile unit equipped with a telemedical service could represent a solution for remote cognitive testing overcoming barriers in rural areas to access specialized diagnosis and care
The Affective Self: Perseverance of Self-Sentiments in Late-Life Dementia
The self has long been construed as a rational, cognitive construct; the cognitive decline of dementia has therefore been largely viewed as the loss of self. Through qualitative interviews, we find that persons with dementia strive to maintain a coherent self despite their increasing disability. Using the theories of affect control theory (ACT) and ACT-Self, we illustrate their shift from using denotative (cognitive) meanings to reliance on conno…

Childhood as a resource and laboratory for the self-project
The biographies of individuals in today's societies are characterized by the need to exert effort and make decisions in planning one's life course. A 'self-project' has to be worked out both retrospectively and prospectively; childhood becomes important as a resource and a laboratory for the self-project. This empirical study analyses how the occupational choices of young people are connected with their occupational aspirations as a child. Childr…

Sozialisation: Soziologische Antworten Auf Die Frage, Wie Wir Werden, Was Wir Sind, Wie Gesellschaftliche Ordnung Möglich Ist und Wie Theorien der Gesellschaft und der Identität Ineinanderspielen
Which Clothes Suit Me: The presentation of the juvenile self
This article outlines the ways in which clothing is one important medium for the presentation of self, on the basis of interviews and group discussions with young people in a qualitative study. In the process of leaving their childhood behind, young people have to present themselves as individuals; the self has to be indicated in an individualized (and unequal) society. Their vestimentary practices are both bound by the social order and also cont…
