  • An Oral Health Promotion Strategy for Persons With Intellectual and Developmental Disability

Open Access•Stephen R Shamblen, Bonnie O Richard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2025

Findings demonstrate that skills-based, experiential training with coaching can be effective in enhancing skill sets and increasing behaviors about oral health among DSP. In addition, results showed that the strategy used can improve oral health outcomes for residents. However, given that there were only improved outcomes in residents' lower anterior sextant, more research is needed to determine how to adequately assess and improve resident outco…

  • “A reinstilled hope that they can change”

    Open Access•Bonnie O Richard, Melissa H Abadi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction: This study assessed the relevance, value, and effectiveness of "Taking Charge of My Life and Health" (TCMLH), a patient wellbeing peer group program for U.S. veterans focused on empowering them to identify what really matters in their lives and to work toward health goals that align with their mission, aspirations, or purpose in life. The potential of TCMLH to empower veterans to engage in self-care behaviors, make health behavior c…

  • Achieving Whole Health

    Open Access•Melissa H Abadi, Bonnie O Richard et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2022

OBJECTIVE: An emerging literature suggests patients with chronic illnesses can benefit from integrated, person-centric approaches to health care, including group-based programs. However, much of the research in this area is disease specific. The objective of this study was to collect preliminary evidence on the efficacy of Taking Charge of My Life and Health (TCMLH), a Whole Health group-based program that emphasizes self-care and empowerment on …

  • Changes in the Patterns and Characteristics of Youth ENDS Use over Time

    Open Access•Stephen R Shamblen, Melissa H Abadi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Research on youth use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has explored the correlates of initiation and use; however, little is known about the factors that predict continued youth use of ENDS. We used an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) burst design to explore both daily variability within adolescents over a two-week observation period and variability over time two years later (2018 and 2020). The contribution of device character…

  • National Implementation of a Group-Based Program Promoting Patient Engagement and Peer Support in the Veterans Health Administration

Open Access•Connor Drake, Melissa H Abadi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Evidence-based approaches promoting patient engagement and chronic illness self-management include peer support, shared decision-making, and education. Designed based on these components, Taking Charge of My Life and Health (TCMLH) is a group-based, 'Whole Person' care program promoting mental and physical self-care and patient empowerment. Despite evidence of effectiveness, little is known about implementation for TCMLH and similar programs. In …

  • Socio-temporal contextual and community factors associated with daily exclusive ENDS use and dual use with tobacco cigarettes among adolescent vapers

    Open Access•Melissa H Abadi, Stephen R Shamblen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Results showed that exposure to peers and adults vaping and exposure to ENDS marketing were associated with same day dual use behaviors. And, that adolescents who dual used were motivated to use ENDS because they were easy to conceal. Findings support stricter regulation of ENDS marketing and for smoke-free air laws that include ENDS. In addition, these findings support prioritizing family- and school-based prevention programming that effectively…

  • Peer-Led Training to Reduce Alcohol Misuse and Related Harm among Greek-Affiliated Students

    Melissa H Abadi, Stephen R Shamblen et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2020

Background High-risk alcohol use on college campuses is a significant public health concern, especially among students in fraternities and sororities. Alcohol harm-reduction programs that include protective behavioral strategies (PBSs) provide a promising approach to curb drinking among students, yet results have been inconsistent among high-risk drinkers. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a harm-reduction, peer-led training program called “Voic…

  • Families, well-being, and inclusion

    Open Access•Bonnie O Richard•ARTICLE•Childhood•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Current policies aimed at children with disabilities in Ladakh, India, focus on the delivery of educational services to the individual child. Ethnographic research conducted with children with cognitive disabilities and their families in this rural Himalayan region reveals why this approach is problematic, given the local cultural context. Critique centers on the mismatch between inclusive education's emphasis on the individual child and the cult…
