The Role and Value of Children in the Ancient Near East During the 3rd Millennium BC
In an attempt to reconstruct the role and value of childhood in 3rd millennium BC Near Eastern societies, this article discusses specific archaeological aspects related to the material culture of children, integrating notions provided by contemporary cuneiform sources. In particular, burial contexts from selected sites of the Euphrates Valley will be analysed since they offer a large set of tangible data to investigate the remains of children and…
Characterizing the Early Bronze III–IVA1 pottery of the northern Levant through typological and petrographic analyses. The case study of Tell Mardikh/Ebla and Tell Tuqan (Syria)
This article uses the results of petrographic analyses carried out on the Early Bronze (EB) III–IVA1 ceramics from Ebla and Tell Tuqan, combined with the functional and morphological classification of the ceramic repertoire, with the dual aims of building a regional ceramic chronology and analysing pottery production at both sites in a diachronic perspective. These datasets indicate, on the one hand, a continuous trend in ceramic production betwe…
Socio-economic complexity at the Late Chalcolithic site of Tell Helawa, Kurdistan Region of Iraq
Survey and excavation at Gird/Tell Helawa, a ca. 10-ha site located in the Erbil Plain, revealed an extensive LC 2-3 period (late 5th to mid-4th millennium BC) settlement, with domestic structures and at least one large building destroyed by fire, located on the top of the main mound. Several sealings bearing stamp seal impressions were found in the building, showing the presence of administrative activity at the site. The evidence from Helawa al…
Breaking down the bullion. The compliance of bullion-currencies with official weight-systems in a case-study from the ancient Near East
In this paper we provide an analytical insight on a specific form of bullion-currency. Through the comparison of the statistical properties of different samples of hacksilver and balance weights from various contexts of the Near Eastern Bronze Age, the study attempts to assess whether the weight values of bullion-currencies can be expected to comply with existing weight-standards. The results of the statistical analyses on a silver hoard from Ebl…
