Public Opinion on Criminal Trial Proceedings in China: An Examination of a Capital Case
Historically, opportunities for members of the public in China to observe criminal trials have been limited. Other than jurors and lay judges (“people’s assessors”), the public has rarely had opportunities to observe criminal trial proceedings in person. Along with China’s reform measures to increase judicial transparency, the move to broadcasting trials online via platforms like China Court Trial Online offers an invaluable opportunity for the p…
Gender and sentencing in capital cases: Chinese criminal justice professionals’ perspectives
The operation of a fair criminal justice system hinges upon its criminal justice professionals (CJPs) making decisions based on considerations of legal but not extra-legal factors. Studies have shown that offenders’ gender, an extra-legal factor, may impact criminal justice decisions. Both the paternalism/chivalry and evil women hypotheses are proposed and tested accordingly. In comparison, fewer studies explored the impact of CJPs’ gender on the…

A Study of Gender Differences on Chinese Criminal Justice Practitioners’ Death Penalty Opinions
Among Western studies of death penalty public opinion, one specific inquiry is on potential gender differences between men and women. While many studies conducted in the United States found a gender gap in which men exhibited significantly higher levels of support for capital punishment, studies of this gender gap in other nations are rare and the results are mixed and inconsistent. Based on a sample of 516 criminal justice professionals (CJPs) f…
Conducting criminological fieldwork in China: A comprehensive review and reflection on power relations in the field
Practical and personal challenges inevitably arise during fieldwork, and identifying these complications is a fundamental part of the research process. Through a comprehensive review of 61 articles and books on criminological fieldwork in China, we discuss in detail five methodological challenges (namely, political sensitivity, cultural challenges, gaining access, insider vs outsider status and ethical issues). Strategies for coping with these ch…

Testing Death Penalty Opinions With General Questions and A Specific Case Scenario: Potential Lessons From China
Despite rich literature on public opinion on capital punishment, only a few studies examined people’s death penalty support within specific contexts. None have explored if correlates that influence people’s opinion would hold the same effect in general questions and specific case scenarios. Similarly, the Marshall hypotheses have not been tested with specific crime scenarios. Based on a sample of 1,077 students in a quasiexperimental design, this…
Family Attachment and Delinquency Among Chinese Adolescents: The Mediating Roles of Adolescent Self-Disclosure and Parental Knowledge
As a crucial factor in the personal development, social interaction, and emotional maturation of children, family attachment plays a prominent role in the social control theory of delinquency. However, limited attention has been paid to the disentanglement and causal ordering of the elements of family attachment. This study utilizes data drawn from a sample of youth in China aged twelve to seventeen to examine path models that specify the interre…
The Dynamics of Anti-Corruption Campaigns in China: An Empirical Study of the Official Rank-Punishment Nexus in the Context of Political and Legal Changes
Along with the escalating corruption problem in China comes the Chinese government's continuous effort to combat corruption. The increased intensity, duration and scope of anti-corruption campaign over time culminated with Xi's effort to fight both 'tigers' and 'flies' during his administration. Despite growing research interests, few empirical studies took a dynamic approach to compare the effect of Xi's campaign with that of his predecessors. B…

Discourses of drug problems and drug control in China: Reports in the People's Daily, 1946-2009
Notwithstanding the role that opium and narcotics have played in China's history, drug use, trafficking and other drug-related problems have been consistently condemned by the Chinese government as social vices. After being a 'drug-free' nation from the 1950s to the 1970s, drug problems resurfaced in the 1980s and China was forced to deal with such problems once again. The Chinese government is well known for its tight control over the media, and…
