Statecraft urbanism
This paper traces the making of Shenzhen’s urbanism as an experiment in governance and design at the frontline of China’s Reform Era since the late 1970s. Drawing on exclusive archival research, interviews, and field studies, it focuses on Overseas Chinese Town (OCT), a ‘new town within the new town,’ as a crucible where the socialist state sought to court global capital, technology, and talent while cultivating markets within a command economy. …
Spatial mismatch and inequality between ecological pressure and economic benefits embodied in agricultural trade
Agricultural trade can balance regional supply and demand but also induces spatial transfers of ecological pressure. However, few studies have combined the spatial transfers of ecological pressures with economic benefits to explore spatial mismatch and inequality. Understanding this relationship can reveal underlying reasons for the dilemma between economic development and ecological conservation. This study uses China as an example, combines the…

Effect of stressors on depressive mood among long-term high-altitude workers
Stressors (working challenges, personal affairs, cognitive factors, and especially low social support) positively predict the depressive mood of long-term high-altitude workers in China. Expression inhibition plays a promoting mediation in the relationship between stressors and depressive mood. A good parent-child relationship alleviates the negative impact of stressors on depressive mood. Findings provide new empirical support for diathesis-stre…
Influencing factors of pregnancy-related anxiety in advanced maternal age primigravidas and the development and evaluation of personalized psychological nursing interventions
Personalized psychological nursing interventions based on identified influencing factors effectively reduce anxiety and improve psychological well-being in AMA primigravidas. Implementation of such interventions in prenatal care could significantly enhance outcomes for this vulnerable population
Clean energy, food, water and environment
Currently, emerging as well as industrialized countries are transitioning toward adopting clean energy sources because of increased environmental calamities. Additionally, the rapid increase in population has improved global food production and demand. Nevertheless, the environmental consequences of food production and water investments have received limited attention from scholars. The present research investigates China's environmental determin…
Presentation mode matters
Good health advice can help patients make the difference between a poor and a positive quality of life. When patients seek advice online, it is similar to search for a second opinion. Presentation mode could play a crucial role in the process of advice seeking and giving. For example, physicians may be reluctant to provide advice if a patient's question is long and difficult to find key information. To enhance the efficacy of communication, we ex…
Association between 19 medication use and risk of common cancers
Background: Previous studies have yielded inconsistent results concerning drug use and the risk of cancers. We conducted a large-scale cross-sectional study and a two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) study to reveal the causal effect between the use of 19 medications and the risk of four common cancers (breast, lung, colorectal, and prostate). Methods: We obtained information on medication use and cancer diagnosis from National Health and Nutr…
Research on different compound combinations of Realgar-Indigo naturalis formula to reverse acute promyelocytic leukemia arsenic resistance by regulating autophagy through mTOR pathway
In the collective pursuit for a better future
Reflecting on the reviews for Building for Oil, the author responds by discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the book’s holistic approach. The author acknowledges the challenges of maintaining a balance among national, local and personal levels of events. Her response concludes by addressing questions of sustainability, drawing attention to the human stories within extreme situations of industrialization and modernization, and expressing gra…
Does early publishing in top journals really predict long-term scientific success in the business field
The soaring number of researchers has led to increasingly intense competition in academia. Early identification of scientists’ potential is a practical but difficult issue currently attracting escalating attention. This study takes the business field as an example and explores whether early publishing in top journals is an effective yardstick to recognise scientists who will have better academic performance in their careers. We extract the career…
A Study of User Activity Patterns and the Effect of Venue Types on City Dynamics Using Location-Based Social Network Data
The main purpose of this research is to study the effect of various types of venues on the density distribution of residents and model check-in data from a Location-Based Social Network for the city of Shanghai, China by using combination of multiple temporal, spatial and visualization techniques by classifying users’ check-ins into different venue categories. This article investigates the use of Weibo for big data analysis and its efficiency in …
Analyzing Social-Geographic Human Mobility Patterns Using Large-Scale Social Media Data
Social media data analytics is the art of extracting valuable hidden insights from vast amounts of semi-structured and unstructured social media data to enable informed and insightful decision-making. Analysis of social media data has been applied for discovering patterns that may support urban planning decisions in smart cities. In this paper, Weibo social media data are used to analyze social-geographic human mobility in the CBD area of Shangha…
Analysis of Green Spaces by Utilizing Big Data to Support Smart Cities and Environment
Green areas or parks are the best way to encourage people to take part in physical exercise. Traditional techniques of researching the attractiveness of green parks, such as surveys and questionnaires, are naturally time consuming and expensive, with less transferable outcomes and only site-specific findings. This research provides a factfinding study by means of location-based social network (LBSN) data to gather spatial and temporal patterns of…
The "Third Spring" of Urban Planning in China
Social and economic changes resulting from the introduction of market allocation processes in the post-Mao era have been enormously consequential in accelerating China's urbanization. Central to such changes have been the fundamental reconceptualization of the role of the city vis-a-vis national development strategies and the consequent revitalization of the practice of urban spatial planning after years of disrepute and dissolution. This article…
Characteristic Elements of Longquan Greenware
Some examples of Longquan greenware have been analysed by neutron activation analysis. Most sherds are from kiln excavations in Zhejiang province, and date from the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties. The elements Ce, Yb, Hf and Ta are shown to be consistently high and suggest that a common clay was used over a long period. The iron content of the glaze is shown to decrease from the Song to the Ming dynasty, implying an improvement in the refiring of …
