Biodiversity conservation and contestations over land: Jihadist expansion in West Africa
That Awful Night in October’: Sensory Experiences of Britain’s 1987 Hurricane
This article explores sensory experiences of the 1987 'Hurricane' in Britain. Through mass observers' testimonies, we examine the impact of sensory disruption to domestic 'sensoria'. We examine in turn disturbing noises; the anxieties circulating around windows; the loss of power to heat and light domestic environments, and, finally, the kinetic power of the storm to threaten the bounds between interior and exterior worlds. An Anthropology of Familismo: On Narratives and Description of Mexican/Immigrants
Research on core cultural values has been central to behavioral and clinical research in ethnic groups. Familismo is one such construct, theorized as the strong identification and attachment of Hispanic persons with their nuclear and extended families. Our anthropological research on this concept among Mexicans and Mexican immigrants in the United States elaborates the concept, and promotes greater complementarity between quantitative and qualita…

Drought, Domestic Budgeting and Wealth Distribution in Sahelian Households
Over the past twenty-five years, Sahelian households have experienced recurrent harvest failure and greater reliance on remittances from migratory wage labour. Household subsistence has become less dependent on household grain stores and more on the liquidation of individual wealth stores. This study investigates how these broader changes have affected struggles between household members over obligations to support the household in the Zarmaganda…
Hong Kong Design and the Roots of Sino-American Trade Disputes
This article draws parallels between recent Sino-American trade disputes and the course of the United States' economic involvement in Hong Kong during the 1950s. The twists and turns of a Cold War policy that first prevented, then promoted, and finally controlled Hong Kong domestic exports is traced through visits by Vice President Nixon and the designer Russell Wright. American influence on Hong Kong industrialists, traders, and designers is als…
