Sars-CoV-2 genomic surveillance using rapid point of care Covid-19 antigen tests at public test sites in California
California’s SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance program (California COVIDNet) developed whole genomic sequencing (WGS) capability from positive COVID-19 antigen tests to maintain genomic surveillance from public test sites. Over 4-months, COVIDNet sourced specimens from positive COVID-19 antigen tests from 142 California public test sites in 43 counties. Successful WGS was defined as at least 83% reference coverage with a minimum 20x genomic read de…
Great, Glorious, and Correct
General Secretary Xi Jinping stood atop Tiananmen Gate and thrust his fist in the air while saying: 'Long live the great, glorious, and correct Chinese Communist Party.'It was the dramatic conclusion to his speech commemorating the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).Descriptions of the Party as 'great, glorious, and correct' () appear occasionally in official media and on banners at important Party even…

This book is a series of profiles of grassroots historians in China whose work documents the atrocities and traumas of Communist Party rule, including land reform, the Anti-Rightist Movement, Great Leap Famine, and violence of the Cultural Revolution, all the way up to the outbreak of covid-19 in Wuhan. Johnson, a longtime foreign correspondent for the New York Times in Beijing until he was expelled from China in 2020, sees these underground hist…
Twelve tips for using rapid research methods in health professions education
Information may be required within a short time-frame for making decisions about programmes and interventions in health professions education. Rapid research methods have been increasingly used in healthcare, especially for qualitative research studies and literature reviews. An essential aspect of using rapid research methods is pragmatism, in which there is a balance between the constraints of the short time frame (typically less than 3 months)…
Never Turn Back
Zhao Ziyang is the star of Julian Gewirtz's history of elite politics during China's 1980s. Zhao, who served as premier from 1980 to 1987 and as general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from 1987 until June 1989, was at the center of contentious debates about China's economic, political, and technological development, often pushing for more openness and faster changes in all three realms. Gewirtz draws on newly available sources to …

Understanding online self-directed learning using point of care information systems (Pocis)
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Understanding self-directed learning (SDL) when using point of care information systems (POCIS) can inform educational providers of the usefulness of the system for continuing medical education (CME). Sen's capability approach can offer a unique perspective to understand SDL, which considers the extent to which individual valued learning needs can be achieved. The aim of the study was to pilot the use of a questionnaire info…
Reluctant and Illegal Migrants in Mao's China
More than 100,000 people from the city of Tianjin were evacuated to the countryside in a civil defense program during the 1970s. Many evacuees refused to submit to state migration mandates, instead sneaking back to the city illegally or petitioning to regain urban residency. City officials responded flexibly to the evacuees’ pleas, sympathizing with family reunification and treating suburban districts ( jiaoqu ) on the outskirts of Tianjin as a b…
The Enduring Female
This study establishes Moses de Leóns unpublished »Unnamed Composition« as the kabbalists first experimental explanation of the sefirot in terms of their androgyny. A text-critical analysis and comparison with subsequent Hebrew writings by de León and passages from the canonical Zohar reveal the distinctive features of the speculation on gender preserved in this early text. Here de Leon (a) repurposes an older three-worlds framework for articulat…

The Tiananmen protests and Beijing massacre of 1989 were a major turning point in recent Chinese history. In this new analysis of 1989, Jeremy Brown tells the vivid stories of participants and victims, exploring the nationwide scope of the democracy movement and the brutal crackdown that crushed it. At each critical juncture in the spring of 1989, demonstrators and decision makers agonized over difficult choices and saw how events could have unfo…
PRC History in Crisis and Clover
The history of the People's Republic of China is now an established discipline, with a built-in theoretical framework—aspirational socialism—and a first draft written by social scientists. The growth of the field of PRC history has been aided by an avalanche of unique grassroots sources. Grassroots documents, many of which are local archives discarded by the state, have prompted new research questions and uncovered hidden dimensions of the Mao ye…
Research project assessments and supervisor marking
Research project modules are a key part of UK undergraduate and postgraduate bioscience degree programmes. Report marking invariably uses two assessors, but marking models are mixed with some institutions using two independent markers and others using the project supervisor as one of the assessors. This latter model is controversial with critics suggesting that it is vulnerable to supervisor bias whilst proponents argue that it ensures subject ex…

Maoism at the Grassroots
Maoism at the Grassroots challenges state-centered views of China under Mao, providing insights into the lives of citizens across social strata, ethnicities, and regions. It reveals how ordinary people risked persecution and imprisonment in order to assert personal beliefs and identities, despite political repression and surveillance
Rural Life
Everyday life under communism was predominantly rural, and most rural people living under communism were Chinese. This chapter examines rural work, including collective land arrangements, varying types of compensation, and creative survival strategies. It also focuses on the central roles of family and sex in the communist countryside. It concludes by assessing how technology, from tractors to electricity to irrigation, transformed villages. Cent…
City Versus Countryside in Mao's China
The gap between those living in the city and those in the countryside remains one of China's most intractable problems. As this powerful work of grassroots history argues, the origins of China's rural-urban divide can be traced back to the Mao Zedong era. While Mao pledged to remove the gap between the city worker and the peasant, his revolutionary policies misfired and ended up provoking still greater discrepancies between town and country, usua…

Rebels, Rent, and Tao Xu
Rebels, Rent, and Tao Xu: Local Elite Identity and Conflict during and after the Tai Ping Occupation of Jiangnan, 1860–84 Jeremy Brown (bio) Between 2004 and 2009, the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee issued six consecutive “number one directives” (yi hao wenjian) about reducing the peasant burden and increasing rural incomes.1 In response, several Chinese scholars have suggested that the writings of an obscure late Qing grain shop own…
Burning the Grassroots
Chen Boda's four cleanups model in Xiaozhan, a marshy area southeast of Tianjin, was as important as Wang Guangmei's Taoyuan brigade in 1964, but is less well known. As Chairman Mao's top theorist and the editor of Red Flag, Chen Boda enjoyed support from Mao and Liu Shaoqi as he uncovered evidence of 'revisionism' in Tianjin's south suburbs. Chen's claims led to a witch-hunt that killed tens of people and tortured and imprisoned many others. Bey…

Dilemmas of Victory
This illuminating work examines the social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions of the Communist takeover of China. Instead of dwelling on elite politics and policy-making processes, Dilemmas of Victory seeks to understand how the 1949-1953 period was experienced by various groups, including industrialists, filmmakers, ethnic minorities, educators, rural midwives, philanthropists, stand-up comics, and scientists. A stellar group of autho…
Quietly working for school-based sexuality education in Mexico
In the past decade, there have been dramatic changes in Mexico in public opinion and support for sexuality education. The growing recognition that young people are sexually active before marriage and need information in order to make responsible choices is the result of intensive health promotion efforts by public and private entities. This paper is about the work of a Mexican non-governmental organisation, IMIFAP, which has designed and evaluate…
Explaining the Reagan Years in Central America
In his analysis of the relations between the United States and Central America through the 1980s, Brown seeks to broaden our view of events and historical processes by examining these relations in historical and global terms in lieu of the usual local or regional comparative focus. By drawing on the central concepts of Immanuel Wallerstein's World System Theory, the ideologically and strategically contorted policies of the Reagan years can be und…
