Traveling games
Michael Burawoy’s game of making out was developed from a unionized workplace under postwar US monopoly capitalism, supported by an internal labor market, grievance procedures, collective bargaining, and broader regulatory protections. Treating this theory not as a universal model of consent but as a historically contingent framework, we review Chinese- and English-language studies that cite Manufacturing Consent and examine workplace games in Ch…
A nurse-centered edge–server wearable system for real-time monitoring of occupational stress in clinical care
Background and objectives Occupational stress among clinical nurses is a long-standing quality-of-care concern associated with burnout, attrition, lapses in patient safety, and erosion of workforce wellbeing. Continuous, nurse-centered monitoring of within-shift physiological stress states is therefore an emerging priority for nursing innovation and quality improvement (QI), yet routine clinical adoption of wearable monitoring is constrained by a…
Agile human activity recognition for wearable devices based on online incremental learning
Background: Achieving high-precision, low-latency, and continuously adaptive human activity recognition on resource-constrained edge devices represents a core challenge. Existing research primarily focuses on improvements in single directions, such as "online learning," "model sparsification," or "feature extraction," lacking a framework that synergistically optimizes all three. This leads to difficulties in dynamically balancing accuracy, latenc…
Conceptualising Socio-Economic Formations of Labour and Workers' Power in Global Production Networks
Despite the importance today of global production networks in linking the international division of labour between the Global North and the Global South, the workers in such networks receive relatively little attention from those interested in the sociology of work. This study applies Glucksmann's concept of 'socio-economic formations of labour' to understand global production networks as an instituted economic process that helps perpetuate an un…
Non-legalistic activism from the social margin
This article, contrary to existing studies, argues that informal workers suffering from pneumoconiosis, an occupational illness, prefer to engage in collective action. Migrant workers mobilize collective action through kinship networks and urban ties, which in turn attracts media coverage and encourages external agents to be involved. Local bureaucracies facing mounting pressure usually provide workers with a one-off compensation. The authors, ho…
Classes of Labour' at the Margins of Global Commodity Chains in India and China
This article deploys the concept of 'classes of labour' to map and compare non-factory labour relations in the garment chain across Delhi and Shanghai metropolitan areas. It contributes to commodity studies by unpacking the great complexity of mechanisms of 'adverse incorporation' of informal work in global commodity chains and production circuits. Field findings reveal the great social differentiation at work in informalized settings in the two …
