What Explains Variants in Resource Nationalism in Latin America’s Lithium Industry
Distribution of Freshwater Plant Communities and Halophytes in Coastal Region, Muan-gun, South Korea
The distribution of freshwater plant communities and the relationships between them and sand dunes, salt marshes, and reclaimed lands of the southwestern coasts of South Korea was studied along with plant factors. Competitor (C), stress tolerator (S), and ruderal (R) (CSR) ecological strategies were also evaluated. To elucidate the relative significance of competition, stress, and disturbance (CSR) in the distribution process of plant communities…
Digitalization and Domestic Revenue Mobilization
Although previous research has highlighted digitalization as a potential avenue for enhancing domestic revenue mobilization—a critical component for the sustainable economic and political development of nations—the relationship between digitalization and domestic revenue mobilization remains underexplored. This paper contributes to the current literature by investigating how the relationship between digitalization and the government's capacity to…
Do populist presidents crowd out FDI inflows? The role of ideology and sectoral characteristics
This study examines nuanced interplay between populist governance, ideological orientation and sectoral characteristics in shaping foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in Latin America, a region where left wing, centrist and right wing populist presidents have frequently challenged established institutions but adopted divergent approaches to FDI across sectors. Using time series cross-sectional data from 18 Latin American countries between 200…
Why do some populist presidents erode liberal democratic institutions more than others in Latin America
This paper contributes to the current literature on the relationship between populist rule and liberal democracy by conducting quantitative research with a time-series cross-sectional dataset covering 18 Latin American countries from 1991 to 2017. The findings reveal an overall negative correlation between populist rule and the quality of liberal democratic institutions, highlighting their inherent incompatibility. Nevertheless, this paper argues…
Exposure to Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles Induces Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Responses in Rat Lungs and Perturbs the Lung Microbiome
Nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) are highly redox active nanoparticles. They can cause acute and chronic inflammation in rat lungs. Unlike the gut microbiome, the association between the lung microbiome's role and pulmonary inflammatory response to inhaled nanoparticles remains largely unexplored. We aimed to explore the interaction between the lung microbiome and inflammatory responses in rats exposed to NiO NPs. Thirty female Wistar rats we…

Development of Nationwide Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk Evaluation Methods with Comprehensive Past Asbestos Exposure Reconstruction
Although exposure to asbestos via various routes has been acknowledged, comprehensive exposure and risk assessment methods have not been developed at the national level. We conducted a study to reconstruct comprehensive past asbestos exposure estimations and to suggest a method to calculate the Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) of Koreans. The past occupational exposure reconstruction was conducted by rebuilding the previous general population j…
Activity-Based Exposure Levels and Cancer Risk Assessment Due to Naturally Occurring Asbestos for the Residents Near Abandoned Asbestos Mines in South Korea
This study aims to evaluate the overall asbestos exposure intensity and assess the health risk to residents due to naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) near abandoned asbestos mines in South Korea. Of 38 mines, we found 19 with measured concentrations of NOA. We evaluated the average of airborne NOA concentrations according to the environmental exposure category. When evaluated regionally by dividing into two clusters, the mean concentrations in ac…
Natural resource abundance, nonresource taxation, and corruption
Why is corruption so prevalent in the majority of developing Latin American countries? While there are several forces driving it, this article focuses on its links to natural‐resource endowment. We present empirical evidence based on a panel dataset of 103 developing countries from 1996 to 2016, suggesting that there is an overall positive relationship between natural‐resource abundance and corruption. What, then, explains the divergent performan…
A systems pharmacology approach to investigate the mechanism of Oryeong-san formula for the treatment of hypertension
This study used the systems pharmacology approach to decipher the mechanisms of action of ORS for the treatment of hypertension. When hypertension drugs and ORS are used in combination for treatment, possible side effects should be considered because most hypertension drugs are related to the RAAS. The results of this study may provide clues to not only analyze the pharmacological activity of ORS for the treatment of hypertension but other diseas…

The Effects of Old-Age Public Transfer on the Well-Being of Older Adults
Our findings contrast with those from the literature. The Korean literature fails to find positive effects on the well-being of older persons. The literature of other countries finds negative incentive effects. The discrepancy may result from differences in methodological approaches and social and cultural contexts and institutional characteristics of the social pension
Mapping Copper and Lead Concentrations at Abandoned Mine Areas Using Element Analysis Data from ICP–AES and Portable XRF Instruments
Understanding spatial variation of potentially toxic trace elements (PTEs) in soil is necessary to identify the proper measures for preventing soil contamination at both operating and abandoned mining areas. Many studies have been conducted worldwide to explore the spatial variation of PTEs and to create soil contamination maps using geostatistical methods. However, they generally depend only on inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrom…
Suppression of dust mite extract and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene-induced atopic dermatitis by the water extract of Lindera obtusiloba
A New Paradigm for Trust-Building on the Korean Peninsula
Can an effort to make peace between humans and nature help bring peace among humans? For nearly two decades, the Six-Party states-the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia, and Japan-either bilaterally or multilaterally have attempted to denuclearize North Korea and make peace on the Korean peninsula. Many options considered by the US and its allies, including a preemptive military strike and coercive economic sanctions against North Korea…

Environmental Movements and Social Organizations in Shanghai
This research aims to analyze environmental movements and social organizations in Shanghai since the late 1990s. The study reveals that civil society in Shanghai has increasingly had an impact on environmentally unfriendly policies given the priority of economic well-being in every aspect of society. The development of social organizations in environmental protection in Shanghai was identified through fieldwork carried out in 2002. Alongside exis…
