From infant separation distress to preschool behavior problems
This study investigated associations between infant separation distress and preschool behavior problems and examined the mediating effects of parenting self‐efficacy and positive parenting on these associations. Participants were 117 young Chinese children and their families. At 14 months, infant separation distress was observed in the Strange Situation Procedure and reported by mothers using the Infant‐Toddler Social Emotional Assessment. Mother…

Revisiting associations between behavioral inhibition/shyness and social competence in young Chinese children
While negative associations between behavioral inhibition/shyness and social competence are well established for children from Western cultures, the directions of these associations have been inconsistent for Chinese children, partly due to the ongoing social-cultural changes in China. Drawing from three samples of young Chinese children (born between 2009 and 2019), we aim at examining how inhibition/shyness predicts cooperative behaviors and pr…
The double burden of malnutrition among young Chinese children
Extant studies have deployed variable-centered methods to examine predictors of children’s nutritional status, and few focus on the double burden of malnutrition among young Chinese children. This paper adopts a person-centered approach and leverages data from large samples of Chinese families (the China Health and Nutrition Survey, CHNS 2004–2015, and China Family Panel Studies, CFPS 2010–2018) to examine trends in the prevalence of stunting, ov…

Committed Compliance and Maternal Parenting Behaviors Predict Internalization of Rules and Externalizing Behaviors in Chinese Preschool Children
This study investigated how parenting behaviors and child committed compliance predicted internalization of rules and externalizing behaviors throughout early childhood. Participants were 95 Chinese mother-child dyads. Maternal respect for autonomy and negative control were observed in free-plays at 14 and 25 months. Toddlers’ committed compliance was coded in a cleanup task at 25 months. At 60 months, internalization of maternal rules and experi…
To excel and to be happy
The current research examined the similarities and differences in parenting behaviors between 1090 Dutch and 2339 urban Chinese mothers with 1- to 4-year olds and investigated to what extent group differences in parenting stress, proportions of only children, and maternal working hours explain cultural variations in parenting behaviors. Thirteen parenting behaviors were assessed using the Comprehensive Early Childhood Parenting Questionnaire. Par…
Goodness of fit in the Chinese context of socialization in the first three years
Based on the goodness-of-fit theory, the current research examined how parental socialization expectations and socialization practices in infancy predicted child social adjustment in the preschool year dependent on child characteristics in toddlerhood with a longitudinal sample of Chinese families. Participants were 272 Chinese mother-child dyads. Maternal socialization goals of child autonomy and obedience were assessed when the child was 6 mont…
Maternal History of Childhood Maltreatment and Control Strategies
Objective The current study examined whether and how mothers' personal history of childhood maltreatment related to control strategies toward their children during infancy in mainland China. Background Although previous studies have linked mothers' history of childhood maltreatment to negative control with their children, no study has systematically investigated the effect of maternal history of childhood maltreatment on control strategies varyin…
The predictive effects of maternal life event stress in early childhood on 5-year-old child behavioral problems
As the primary caregiver, mothers have the most frequent interactions with children and display the most significant influence on children’s development. If mothers experience intense life event stress, they may create a stressful environment for their children’s early development. Living in such a developmental environment raises children’s risk of behavior problems in later childhood. Regarding the predictive effects of maternal stress on child…
