Policy-Induced Fertility Suppression and Marital Satisfaction
Having children is widely regarded as one of the most important benefits and purposes of marriage, particularly in societies that uphold traditional family values. Consequently, the suppression of fertility could have far-reaching implications for marital life that transcend childbearing itself. Previous studies have examined the impact of health-induced fertility suppression, but a gap remains in understanding how policy-induced fertility restri…
Taxation and Migration of Peasants
This paper studies the effect of rural taxation on Chinese peasants’ mobility towards urban areas. We find that the tax alleviation due to the tax-for-fee reform significantly reduces rural-to-urban migration, with a 10% decline in tax leading to a 10% reduction in migration. We provide compelling evidence that the result is not driven by unintended policy effects of the tax-for-fee reform in fostering rural non-agricultural job opportunities. Th…
Instrumental voting under authoritarianism
Using data on 8,872 voters in 209 villages from Chinese Family Panel Studies, this paper uncovers compelling evidence of instrumental voting in the context of Chinese rural elections. First, voter turnouts are significantly higher in villages where rural committees control greater income opportunities and provide more public goods; second, voters’ economic reliance on these income opportunities and public goods is found to be positively correlate…

Institutional dynamics and access to non‐farm employment in rural China, 1950–1996
This article examines non‐farm employment in the context of Chinese rural institutional change, based on evidence from discrete‐time logistic models for event history analysis using the Life History and Social Change survey. We find the transition to non‐farm sector rose rapidly during the Great Leap Forward and market reform, while the Cultural Revolution saw it reach the lowest ebb. While male advantage prevailed exclusively during the Cultural…

No Taxation Without Representation? An Empirical Examination of the Relationship Between Democratization and Tax Compliance
Land tenure arrangements and rural-to-urban migration
This paper studies how land tenure arrangements will shape China's rural land transfer market and labor allocation. Based on data from the Chinese Household Income Project (2002) and the China Family Panel Studies (2010 and 2012), we use fixed effect models and difference-in-differences method to investigate the effects of the implementation of Rural Land Contracting Law on villagers' behavioral patterns in land transfer and rural-to-urban migrat…
