  • Enforcement drives conservation policy impacts at the Brazilian agricultural frontier

Javier Miranda, David Wuepper et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2026

Why do forest conservation policies work in some contexts but not in others? Here we empirically evaluate how the effectiveness of complementary conservation policy instruments layered onto command-and-control forest regulation depends on environmental law enforcement. We exploit a biome-based policy assignment rule that created policy discontinuities along the official Amazon-Cerrado boundary in Brazil. We find that Amazon-specific governance in…

  • Energy distributive injustices

    Open Access•Zana Cranmer, Laurel Steinfield et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 7

As the United States transitions away from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources, questions abound as to whether this is occurring in an equitable way. Are renewable energy power plants sited near privileged or marginalized communities, and how does this compare with non-renewable power plants? To answer this question, this article contrasts the sociodemographic profiles of host versus non-host communities for utility scale power plants at a na…

  • Notas de historia oral de la TV desde una perspectiva local y regional

    Open Access•Mariana Perticará, Javier Miranda•ARTICLE•RevCom•2021

Open Access•Javier Miranda, Mariana Perticará•ARTICLE•Culturas.

  • Land speculation and conservation policy leakage in Brazil

Open Access•Javier Miranda, Jan Börner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

The Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado biomes have been subject to strong pressure from agricultural expansion over the past decades. It is frequently claimed that the associated tree cover loss was partly driven by land speculation. In the mid-2000s, the Brazilian government implemented an innovative policy regime to combat deforestation with a strong focus on the Amazon region. While there is solid evidence that the new environmental governance appro…

  • Taken by storm

    Open Access•Emek Basker, Javier Miranda•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 7

We use Hurricane Katrina’s damage to the Mississippi coast in 2005 as a natural experiment to study business survival in the aftermath of a capital-destruction shock. We find very low survival rates for businesses that incurred physical damage, particularly for small firms and less-productive establishments. Conditional on survival, larger and more-productive businesses that rebuilt their operations hired more workers than their smaller and less-…

  • The Role of Entrepreneurship in US Job Creation and Economic Dynamism

    Open Access•Ryan Decker, Ryan A Decker et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 19

An optimal pace of business dynamics-encompassing the processes of entry, exit, expansion, and contraction-would balance the benefits of productivity and economic growth against the costs to firms and workers associated with reallocation of productive resources. It is difficult to prescribe what the optimal pace should be, but evidence accumulating from multiple datasets and methodologies suggests that the rate of business startups and the pace o…

  • Who Creates Jobs? Small versus Large versus Young

John Haltiwanger, Ron S Jarmin et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2013

The view that small businesses create the most jobs remains appealing to policymakers and small business advocates. Using data from the Census Bureau's Business Dynamics Statistics and Longitudinal Business Database, we explore the many issues at the core of this ongoing debate. We find that the relationship between firm size and employment growth is sensitive to these issues. However, our main finding is that once we control for firm age, there …

  • Caracterización De Obsidianas Del Norte Y Centro Sur De Chile Mediante Análisis De Fluorescencia De Rayos X

Open Access•Andrea Seelenfreund, Javier Miranda et al.•ARTICLE•Chungara•2005•Cited by: 1
