  • From Matter to Material Culture

    Maureen C Miller•ARTICLE•Common Knowledge•2024•References: 12

As a contribution to the Common Knowledge symposium "Caroline Walker Bynum across the Disciplines," this essay traces the origins and development of Bynum's interest in the material artifacts of late medieval Christian spirituality. The author narrates these evolutions through analyses of a single object, the Louvain beguine cradle from the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The essay begins by treating Bynum's research from the 1980s…

  • Reframing the “Documentary Revolution” in Medieval Italy

    Maureen C Miller•ARTICLE•Speculum•2023•References: 12

In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the clerics of the congregation of San Salvatore in Naples were preparing a petition, or maybe a legal defense, regarding their taxes

  • The Bishops’ Books of Città Di Castello in Context

    Open Access•Maureen C Miller•ARTICLE•Traditio•2021

Revisiting Robert Brentano's 1960 article in Traditio on “The Bishops’ Books of Città di Castello,” this contribution challenges a reigning narrative of the “documentary revolution” in medieval Italy as primarily the achievement of the thirteenth-century communal governments of the north. While these urban ruling regimes did produce prodigious numbers of documents and new documentary forms, they were not the earliest innovators. By broadening the…

  • Clothing as communication? Vestments and views of the papacy c. 1300

    Maureen C Miller•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2018

This essay argues that Pope Boniface VIII (1294–1303) used clothing in a highly intentional and performative manner to communicate his status and authority. His audience, however, was quite limited – essentially, the small community of those who aspired to hold or influence the power of the Holy See – and the messages conveyed were not particularly complex. Attempting a reception history of papal attire c.1300, the essay surveys remarks regarding…

  • Julia Barrow. The Clergy in the Medieval World

    Open Access•Maureen C Miller•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

In The Clergy in the Medieval World, Julia Barrow provides an immensely valuable social history of the secular clergy in northern France, England, and the German kingdom. Her central questions focus on the clerical life cycle: When was the decision made that a male should enter into the clergy, and who made it? Did clerics maintain relations with their families; if so, how? What career paths did clerics follow, and how were they trained? Answers …

  • The Significance of St Cuthbert’s Vestments

    Open Access•Maureen C Miller•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•2011

Sanctity is a quality first perceived, then acclaimed, contested or affirmed. Most commonly the visual perception of sanctity took the form of witnessing miracles: individuals saw with their own eyes divine power working through another human being. The development of the cult of the saints in western Europe, however, gave rise to a rich visual and material culture. The tombs of saints and the churches dedicated to them were adorned with precious…

  • The Crisis in the Investiture Crisis Narrative

    Open Access•Maureen C Miller•ARTICLE•History Compass•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Recent research has undermined the connection between lay investiture and the iconic event usually seen as the most dramatic expression of the investiture conflict: the encounter of Pope Gregory VII and King Henry IV of Germany at Canossa. This is just one, however, of many interpretive problems plaguing historical narratives of the investiture crisis. This essay briefly summarizes the classic interpretations that have dominated 20th‐century unde…

Historical narrations of the Gregorian Reform tend to cultivate a certainmachismo. The traditional narrative emphasizes a struggle for dominance between two men, Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henry IV, which escalated from epistolary sparring to armed combat and culminated in a dramatic scene in which one man was on his knees before the other at Canossa. Even the newer narratives, such as the late Karl Leyser's "Gregorian Revolution," while highli…
