  • A Note on Origen, in Ev. Joannis XIX.5

    Open Access•Ralph Marcus•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1954

In Origen's discussion of the part played by the Logos in the creation of the world, In Ev. Joannis xix.5 (PG xiv. 568 b–c), there occurs a long sentence which is not altogether clear, chiefly because of the uncertainty of the punctuation. The text, as given by the four modern editors, Lommatzsch, Migne, Preuschen and Brooke, who agree throughout except in the two instances to be noted, is as follows (with punctuation after the biblical quotation…

  • The Armenian Life of Marutha of Maipherkat

    Open Access•Ralph Marcus•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1932

The Armenian Vita here translated, of Marutha, a Syrian bishop of the fifth century, has an interest because of Marutha's activity as mediator between the Byzantine emperors, Arcadius and Theodosius II, and the Sassanian king Yezdegerd I. The ancient sources for the life of Marutha are scanty nor does the biography here translated add greatly to our knowledge of him. From the Greek and Nestorian sources it is known that he was present at the impo…

  • An Armenian-Greek Index to Philo's Quaestiones and De Vita Contemplativa

Ralph Marcus•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•1933

IN VOL. XLIX of the Journal of Biblical Literature (1930, p. 61ff.) the writer published a brief paper on the nature of the Armenian translation of Philo's Quaestiones in Genesim et Exodum on the basis of the text published by Aucher at Venice in 1826. As is well known, the Greek original of this Philonic work has been almost entirely lost except for a small number of fragments in patristic writings and catenae, which have been collected and publ…

  • Notes on Torrey's Translation of the Gospels

    Open Access•Ralph Marcus•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1934

Professor Torrey's new translation of the Gospels has more importance than a mere substantiation of a thesis might be expected to have. Whether or not his theory of a written Aramaic (and in part Hebrew) original of the four Gospels is correct, there can be no doubt of the value to New Testament scholarship of a critical translation made by so competent a Semitist and biblical student as the author is universally acknowledged to be. And lest this…

  • The ‘Plain Meaning’ of Isaiah 42.1–4

    Open Access•Ralph Marcus•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1937

The expression ‘plain meaning’ is here used in the sense of Hebrew peshat , since this paper is not primarily a study in the higher criticism of Deutero-Isaiah. But I may perhaps be allowed to make three brief preliminary statements of belief concerning the relation of the passage under discussion to the rest of the book: First: that the conception of the Servant found in 42.1–4 is closer to that found in the whole of Deutero-Isaiah than it is to…
