God did not make death
This article examines early Christian interpretations of Wisdom 1:13 and 2:23 from the middle of the third century to the end of the fourth century. These verses were important to Christian articulations of the goodness of creation—both the cosmos as a whole and the human creature. Christian theologians and exegetes broadly agreed in their usage of these verses, arguing against alternative philosophical perspectives that God’s creation is good, w…

A Social Biography of Hopi Activist, Ernest Naquayouma
Hopi activist, Ernest Naquayouma, was a co-founder of the American Indian Center in Chicago, which was the first urban, intertribal, Native-run community center in the United States (est. 1953). He is also well-known for the work he did with US ethnolinguist Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1930s. Although the literature on these topics often mentions Naquayouma's name, the significance of his role in both of these stories has been largely overlooked. R…
Knowledge Construction in Late Antiquity
Social Studies of the sciences have long analyzed and exposed the constructed nature of knowledge. Pioneering studies of knowledge production in laboratories (e.g., Latour/Woolgar 1979; Knorr-Cetina 1981) have identified factors that affect processes that lead to the generation of scientific data and their subsequent interpretation, such as money, training and curriculum, location and infrastructure, biography-based knowledge and talent, and chan…

A Former Aboriginal Camp-site on the Sturt River at Marion, South Australia
This paper records a collection of stone implements from a camp-site by the Sturt River at Marion, South Australia. Aborigines were known to have lived by this river at the time the first Europeans settled in South Australia. The closer settlement and development of the district, in recent years, has obliterated the camp-site on which the implements were found. A map has been prepared to show its former situation. Among the implements recovered f…

The Association of Perceived Partner-related Social Support with Self-reported Outcomes in Women Post-mastectomy
Marital satisfaction is an important indicator of adaptation in patients with cancer; however, its relationship to medium-to-long-term health-related outcomes is less well understood. Married women ( N = 152) at least six months post-mastectomy were surveyed to determine whether marital satisfaction predicted non-weight-related body image distress (BID), pain impact, and mood, or whether the directionality of this association operated in reverse.…
Walter Map
Walter Map's De nugis curialium stakes a radical claim for authorship and writing within twelfth-century European literary culture. Map imagines a form of authorship based on his ambivalence toward his immediate court context and the alterity of his being a subordinate, belated writer. He privileges materials from the margins of established literary discourse, and he fashions reading not just as the application of fit moral lessons but as an acti…
Self-Efficacy as a Predictor of Adult Adjustment to Sickle Cell Disease
OBJECTIVE: The present study prospectively investigated the role of self-efficacy in predicting disease symptomatology and health services utilization for adult patients with sickle cell disease. METHODS: These data are derived from a 12-month prospective cohort study of African American adults with sickle cell disease. Disease-specific perceptions of coping self-efficacy and indices of disease severity, health care utilization, and psychosocial …

The Book of the Duchess and the Beginnings of Chaucer's Narrative
T H HE TRADITION connecting Book of Duchess with death of Blanche of Lancaster, begun by Chaucer and continued in later centuries, has determined most approaches to Chaucer's first narrative. Alceste's listing the Deeth of Blaunche Duchesse among author's works in Legend of Good Women and Man of Law's mentioning a youthful Ceys and Alcione as well as testimony of John Lydgate and others draw attention to historical and social contexts but without…
