Keeping It (Too Much) in the Family: Annulment by Reason of Affinity in Eighteenth-Century Venice
Although divorce was increasingly available through religious and civil courts in 18th-century Europe, the Catholic Church still considered marriage indissoluble. Thus, the only legal route out of a marriage was annulment. Historians have noted several strategies for annulments in premodern Europe, most often claims of lack of consent. One less common but interesting way to seek annulment was to claim affinity by fornication, in which one spouse …
History and historical fiction: Experiences from history undergraduates
This article argues for the potentially transformative value of using historical fiction in the teaching of undergraduate history. While there is substantial scholarship ably demonstrating the value of historical fiction in primary and secondary education as a tool for encouraging engagement and interest in history and helping younger students to develop empathy, there is less discussion of the utility of historical fiction in higher education. T…
Priests Behaving Badly: The Problem of Scandal in the Early Modern Catholic Church
In the twentieth century, many Catholic authorities prioritized the suppression of scandal over the punishment of criminal priests, and the church now faces an even greater scandal as the extent of this coverup becomes known. While the specific situation may be new, the church’s aversion to scandal is not. This article connects the contemporary situation to the struggles faced by the Counter-Reformation Church regarding scandal. Applying sociolog…
Dangerous liaisons, or strategies for family management in eighteenth-century Venice
In 1745, a lengthy and unusual case was brought before the Venetian Executors against Blasphemy, a secular court with jurisdiction over a wide range of crimes that violated standards of morality. The parents of two young women from the Venetian mainland state were accused of pimping their two eldest daughters to Jewish men from the Venetian Ghetto in return for financial support, helping them to support their ten children. But the story became mu…

Historični seminar 14
The volume Historični seminar 14 ('Historical Seminar 14'), issued in the time of transformed reality of what we knew and took for granted, draws attention to the fact that the image we cultivate of ourselves and our history may sometimes be too simplified to be entirely real. At first, the volume both revises already known chapters of Church history and introduces hitherto unknown ones. Simon Malmenvall’s analysis of the characters of the noble …

Preaching and Inquisition in Renaissance Italy: Words on Trial, by Giorgio Caravale
The line between orthodoxy and heresy is notoriously fine, particularly in the sixteenth century. As the Catholic Church—and particularly the Inquisition—struggled to define clearly the limits of orthodoxy in the midst of the Protestant Reformation, many theologians, preachers and ordinary believers found themselves suddenly on the wrong side of the line. In his study of Ippolito Chizzola (1521–65), Giorgio Caravale brings us a figure who managed…
Molding the Model Bishop from Trent to Vatican II
The creation of new saints often has a political edge; the Catholic Church molds saints' lives to fit its needs, and individual popes have particular priorities in saint-making. In the early modern Church, this was particularly important after the Council of Trent. The Tridentine decrees (1563) instructed bishops to reform the Church but provided few practical suggestions for how to do this. One solution was to hold up exemplary post-Tridentine b…
Conceptualizing the Priest: Lay and Episcopal Expectations of Clerical Reform in Late Seventeenth-Century Padua
