Art and the Artist in the Lutheran Reformation: Johannes Mathesius and Joachimsthal
Luther's student Johann Mathesius, longtime pastor in the Bohemian mining town of Joachimsthal, provides a lens for seeing early modern art and artists through Lutheran eyes, challenging modern interpretations of the dire consequences of the Reformation for the visual arts.1For Mathesius, pre-Reformation art provided not only evidence of old idolatry but also testimony to the preservation of Evangelical faith under the papacy. After the Reformati…
Martin Luther: Confessor of the Faith – By Robert Kolb
MARTIN LUTHER: CONFESSOR OF THE FAITH . By Robert Kolb . Christian Theology in Context . Oxford : Oxford University Press , 2009 . Pp. vi + 215 . Cloth, $99.00; paper, $35.00 . Kolb offers a guidebook to Luther's theology, remarkable for its compression but generally well digested, which offers a helpful first alternative to other, more compendious surveys of Luther's thought (Althaus; Ebeling; Lohse; Bayer; McKim). The book succeeds in integrati…
Devotional Life In Hymns, Liturgy, Music, And Prayer
This chapter seeks to illumine that piety of song and prayer in both public and private contexts within 16th-century Lutheranism. The hymns, used in the home to teach and to comfort, were a key manifestation of the universal Christian priesthood, which-as the Lutheran clergy themselves urged-was not inferior in its capacity to the public ministry of the Word. Though the vernacular hymnal was essentially a Lutheran invention, the prayerbook was we…
Singing the Gospel: Lutheran Hymns and the Success of the Reformation
This book offers a new appraisal of the Reformation and its popular appeal, based on the place of German hymns in the sixteenth-century press and in the lives of early Lutherans. The Bohemian mining town of Joachimsthal--where pastors, musicians, and laity forged an enduring and influential union of Lutheranism, music, and culture--is at the center of the story.
Finding the Middle Way: The Utraquists' Liberal Challenge to Rome and Luther
Communal Christianity: The Life and Loss of a Peasant Vision in Early Modern Germany. (Studies in Central European History, number 35.)
A 200,000-Year Record of Change in Oxygen Isotope Composition of Sulfate in a Saline Sediment Core, Death Valley, California
δ 18 O values of sulfate minerals from a 186-m core (past 200,000 years) in Death Valley varied from +9 to +23‰ (V-SMOW). Sulfates that accumulated in the past ephemeral saline lake, salt pans, and mud flats have relatively low δ 18 O values similar to those of present-day local inflows. Sulfates that accumulated during two perennial lake intervals, however, have higher δ 18 O values, reflecting changes in temperature, lake water levels, and/or s…
