Unpredictability and the Responsibilities of the Early Modern Historian
Sin in Medieval and Early Modern Culture: The Tradition of the Seven Deadly Sins, ed. Richard G. Newhauser and Susan J. Ridyard
This book presents scholarship from both a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar and the Sewanee Medieval Colloquium. It begins with Richard Newhauser’s superb overview of recent scholarship on the seven deadly sins, in which he contextualises the essays in this volume and points to areas in need of additional research. Seven essays follow, grouped together for their focus on religious, intellectual, and pastoral themes. According …

The study, and teaching, of African history can feel like a Herculean endeavour: fifty-three nation-states, hundreds of millions of people, thousands of cultures and languages, and a human history dating from the very birth of mankind. The difficulty of this task is compounded by the fact that many students arrive to read African history at undergraduate level with little prior knowledge, apart from that which they have gleaned from listening to B…

Confession and Absolution in Caroline Cambridge: The 1637 Crisis in Context
In June 1637, Anthony Sparrow and Sylvester Adams, two Cambridge scholars, preached in Great St. Mary’s Church on the subject of confessing sins. Their sermons caused such a scandal that a deeply divided vice-chancellor’s court had to act. These sermons have not gone unnoticed by historians, but they have not been contextualized in a way that makes complete sense both of the sermons and of their reception. Sparrow’s sermon, published shortly afte…

Good Pastors or Careless Shepherds? Parish Ministers and the English Reformation
The post‐Reformation English parish clergy were not pastoral failures or ‘careless shepherds’ who were forced by parishioners to change their doctrine and tactics. From the beginning, the reformed church taught an ideal of ministry that was extremely sensitive to its audience. This ideal emphasized preaching a balance of repentance and mercy and rejected divisive behaviour such as attacking individual sinners from the pulpit. Moreover, preaching …

The Wars of the Roses
Marriage Reform and the Elizabethan High Commission
Marriage law reform was a common feature of Protestantism. In England, attempts to reform the law failed. Judges also refused to engage in "judicial activism" to achieve reform from the bench. Creation of the High Commission provided a new opportunity for reform. From the records of the Northern High Commission it is clear that it refused to encroach upon the matrimonial jurisdiction of the ordinary courts, but used its authority to assist those …
Death, Burial and the Individual in Early Modern England
Clerical Marriage and the English Reformation
The abolition of clerical celibacy in England was, according to its first great modern student, Henry Charles Lea, “a process of far more intricacy than in any other country which adopted the Reformation.” Since Lea wrote, historians have come to accept an outline of that process. According to this standard view, it was Henry VIII, acting out of his own personal conservatism, who retained and defended mandatory celibacy in the first stage of the …
