  • The Textual Culture of English Protestant Dissent, 1720–1800, by Tessa Whitehouse

    D W Bebbington, David Bebbington•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2017

‘How doth the little crocodile/ Improve his shining tail’ begins one of Lewis Carroll’s light-hearted poems in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The verse is a satire of ‘How doth the little busy bee/ Improve each shining hour’, the opening of ‘Against Idleness and Mischief’ by Isaac Watts. The original appeared in Watts’s Divine Songs Attempted in Easy Language for the Use of Children, first printed in 1715; the satire was published in 1865. Wat…

  • Secession and Revival: Louth Free Methodist Church in the 1850s

    D W Bebbington, David Bebbington•ARTICLE•Wesley and Methodist Studies•2015

At Louth in Lincolnshire there emerged in the 1850s a Free Methodist Church. Wesleyans had been hugely successful in the area, but there was internal opposition to Methodist Conference policies. The corn merchant J. B. Sharpley led a secession from Wesleyanism, contributing ideas about the rights of lay leaders. The new denomination gathered support from tradesmen and shopkeepers, and made efforts to recruit waverers. Its members became keen on e…

    Open Access•D W Bebbington, David Bebbington•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•2008•References: 1

A brief but classic account of a Cornish revival is to be found in Salome Hocking’s book Some Old Cornish Folk , published in 1903. Writing semi-fictionally but also semi-ethnographically about a number of years before, the author, herself sprung from Cornish Methodism, described the thronging penitents, the exuberant singing and the ‘thrill of excitement’ that went through the village. Crucially she commented on the circumstances. The revival, s…

The debate surrounding the appointment of George Jackson to a chair at Didsbury College in 1913 has been the chief theological controversy of the twentieth century in British Methodism. It forms an instance of an effort to extinguish alleged theological error, an attempt at persecution within rather than outside the church. It was, as contemporaries complained, a heresy hunt, comparable in some respects to the suppression of Modernism in the Roma…

Patterns of voting in Britain between the second Reform Act of 1867 and the Franchise Act of 1918 have to be scrutinized afresh in the light of Dr Dunbabin's recent suggestion that very little changed in the period. The electoral profile of the regions, he argues, remained fundamentally constant from well before the period until well afterwards. The basis of the cleavage between conservative and anti-conservative voters was deeply ingrained in re…

    Open Access•D W Bebbington, David Bebbington•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1979•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The late nineteenth-century city posed problems for English nonconformists. The country was rapidly being urbanised. By 1881 over one third of the people lived in cities with a population of more than one hundred thousand. The most urbanised areas gave rise to the greatest worry of all the churches: large numbers there were failing to attend services. The religious census of 1851 had already shown that the largest towns were the places where ther…

  • Gladstone and the nonconformists: A religious affinity in politics

    Open Access•D W Bebbington, David Bebbington•ARTICLE•Studies in Church History•1975•References: 1

Nonconformists had an attitude of veneration for Gladstone. They admired his political skills; they were grateful for the legislative benefits he had brought them like the abolition of compulsory church rates and the opening of higher degrees at the ancient universities; and they were roused by his displays of oratorical power. Yet their respect for Gladstone went far beyond what was due to the able leader of a political party. There was amongst …
