Gold as a Monetary Standard, 1914–1919
In 1914 I was a student in college and according to our textbooks the nature and operation of the gold standard was a subject that presented few difficulties. Countries, we learned, were on the gold standard if they selected as a unit of account a certain weight of gold of a certain fineness and made their currencies convertible into gold at the rate fixed by this definition. If, in addition, such countries placed no restrictions on the export or…

A Century of Theological Education and after
In this address the beginnings of theological education in this country are traced to the practical needs of the various denominations for an educated ministry who should intelligently maintain denominational beliefs. The curriculum of the early seminary is described. The changes of a century in American ideals and social habits are described, and the resulting changes in religious ideas and problems are indicated. The task of modern theological …

The Seminary of Tomorrow
It may be objected to our title that it begs the most important question at issue. Who knows whether tomorrow there will be any seminary? In the stern competition that is before us no institution can hope to survive which does not prove itself indispensable. What right have we to assume that the seminary will be found in this class
The Permanent Significance of Miracle for Religion
A few days ago, meeting one of my scientific friends, I happened to mention the fact that I was going to Harvard to deliver the Dudleian Lecture, and that I had chosen as my subject “The Permanent Significance of Miracle for Religion.” “It is a good subject,” he said, “but you have left out the most important word. It ought to read ‘The Lack of Permanent Significance of Miracle for Religion.’”

Is Our Protestantism Still Protestant
There are two classes of people who have an interest in the question which we have proposed for discussion. It may be asked by those who believe that in historic Protestantism we have the true and final form of religion, and who therefore view with alarm any radical departure from the position of the earlier Reformers. In this case the question whether our Protestantism is still Protestant will mean the inquiry whether our modern liberal Christia…
The Theology of William Newton Clarke
Fifteen years ago there appeared a volume of some four hundred pages, which bore the modest title, An Outline of Christian Theology . It had originally been prepared by the author, a professor in Hamilton Theological Seminary, for the use of his seminary classes, and, after circulating for some time in the form of typewritten notes, was privately printed for the greater convenience of the users. No attempt was made to advertise the book, but in d…
The Old Theology and the New
By the old theology we mean the type of theology which, whatever its date, ignores the modern scientific movement and is unaffected in method by the results of that movement. By the new theology, conversely, we mean the type of theology whose method is determined by the modern scientific movement and which is hospitable to its results. The purpose of this article is to ask what is the relation of the two, what they have in common, wherein they di…
