  • Christianity and Race in the American South: A History; Hard, Hard Religion: Interracial Faith in the Poor South

    Open Access•Gaines M Foster•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2019

For many, the South is the Bible belt, a place of religious conformity dominated by conservative evangelicals. To that pervasive image, Christianity and Race in the American South and Hard, Hard Religion bring a welcome complexity. In Christianity and Race in the American South, Paul Harvey, one of the most important students of southern religion, provides a “deliberately selective” “narrative history of race and southern Christianities from the …

    Gaines M Foster•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

In Bonds of Union: Religion, Race, and Politics in a Civil War Borderland, Bridget Ford studies a borderland between North and South, the Ohio River Valley, concentrating on Cincinnati, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky. Ford not only writes about a geographical borderland but also lodges her study within the historiographical borderland between cultural and political history. Studying the years leading up to and through the Civil War, she seeks to …

  • Denmark Vesey’s Garden: Slavery and Memory in the Cradle of the Confederacy

    Open Access•Gaines M Foster•ARTICLE•Civil War Book Review•2018•Cited by: 3

In the wake of Dylann Roof’s murders at a Charleston church and another death during the violence at the Lee Monument in Charlottesville, a public debate over taking down Confederate monuments has intensified. The resulting discussion of the meaning of the Confederacy and the use of Confederate symbols can help Americans better understand their racial past. In coming to terms with that past, however, it may be even more important to address how A…

In 1895, Wilbur F. Crafts opened on office in Washington, D.C. and proclaimed himself a Christian lobbyist. Over the next quarter century, until his death in 1922, he mobilized churches and individual Christians to pressure Congress on behalf of bills, some he had written, to limit divorce, to control sexuality, and to restrict or prohibit the use of narcotics and alcohol. • The Limitations of Federal Health Care for Freedmen, 1862-1868

    Gaines M Foster•ARTICLE•The Journal of Southern History•1982

DURING THE CIVIL WAR THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT FREED the slaves, not in a fit of absent-mindedness exactly but at least with no plan for making freedom a reality. In the months and years after the decision in favor of emancipation, a tentative federal policy for easing the blacks' transition to freedom emerged. Recent studies have often concluded, though, that federal efforts did little to encourage true freedom and independence for the former…
