Visual-verbal communication on online newspaper home pages
This article is a study of visual, verbal and visual-verbal communication on the home pages of three English-language online newspapers from different national cultures. Important similarities in the visual-verbal structure of news stories and home pages between the three newspapers are identified. Each newspaper demonstrates a similar tendency towards atomization of news texts with which readers interact over short time scales, and a tendency to…

Waiting for Deborah: John Knox and Four Ruling Queens
Qiu v. Secretary-General of the United Nations
In September 1984, the UN Secretary-General (Respondent) offered five-year fixed-term contracts as interpreters to Rong Qiu, Kefu Zhou, and Jiping Yao (Applicants), who had just completed the UN training course for interpreters at the Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages. The letters of appointment accepted by the Applicants stated that they were “on secondment from the Government of China.” They received very good performance ratings, and in t…

A. C. Ewing—A Critical Survey of Ewing's Recent Work
Is the existence of God a reasonable metaphysical hypothesis? So asks A. C. Ewing in his important posthumous work, Value and Reality . Thus the topic of the book is theistic religion, not in its entirety, but rather merely in its intellectual part. That it does have such a part, and further that it makes claims ‘to objective truth in the field of metaphysics’ (p. 24), is defended on the grounds ( a ) that a fictional ‘story’ about God has what r…

Can the Self Survive the Death of its Mind
C. A. Campbell has written: ‘Almost everyone...takes it to be in principle intelligible to ask whether the self can survive the destruction of its body . But it is taken by no one to be in principle intelligible to ask whether the self can survive the destruction of its mind .’ But is it, after all, so clearly nonsense to suppose that a self can survive the destruction of its mind? This at least is the question I shall raise in this paper. The wo…
A Note on the Format of the Pauline Corpus
In the April, 1956 issue of the Harvard Theological Review appeared an article by Jack Finegan on “The Original Form of the Pauline Collection,” which purports to be a refutation of some suggestions of my own about the order of the letters in the primitive collection. Without intending to do so, he seriously misrepresents my position. I should like to correct this error in understanding as well as to make a few additional comments
