Could Manichaeans Be Happy: Life Here and Now, Manichaeism, and Nag Hammadi
There has been an increasing appreciation of Manichaeans’ capability for certain optimistic expressions about the created cosmos, in spite of their reputation for obsessing about the evil agents of darkness. This present study reviews some of the supporting evidence and explores possible implications for day-to-day life experience among Manichaeans. In spite of a cosmology conveying an ostensibly very dark worldview, could a Manichaean ever have …
Library Patrons’ Psychosocial Needs: Perceptions of Need and Reasons for Accessing Social Work Services
Public libraries in the United States have begun to partner with social work to address the psychosocial needs observed in patrons that are beyond the training and education of most library staff. This is a new area of inquiry with limited research available. Of the few published studies, the majority focus on staff perceptions of patrons' needs and surveys of patrons experiencing homelessness about their use of public libraries. The present stud…
Black Barrio on the Border: “Blaxicans” of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico
Typically, analysts perceive the U.S.-Mexico border in terms of brown and white, that is, as the place where Mexican and (White) American cultures both come together as well as divide and conflict. Although the standard emphases are beginning to change, there is still a dearth of studies of border people of African descent. The article concerns a Black barrio in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, that existed from the 1950s to the 1990s. The life …
Fraud Cycles
Fraud is an ancient crime and one that annually causes hundreds of billions of dollars in losses. We develop an evolutionary theory that suggests cyclical behavior in frauds should be common. We perform a wavelet analysis of the frequencies of fraudulent and nonfraudulent offenses. Our results demonstrate that the frequencies of fraudulent offenses exhibit cyclical behavior that differs markedly from the cyclical behavior of nonfraudulent offense…

Why Marx Neither Has Nor Needs a Commodity Theory of Money
This paper argues, contrary to the standard interpretation, that money in Marx's theory is tied neither to bullion nor to any commodity basis. It is rather the sole social form of value autonomous from use-value. This is demonstrated by reference to Marx's account of the social functions of money, and by showing that to subsume 'money' under 'commodity' commits a category mistake within Marx's system. My argument is conceptual rather than histori…

La Familia Bañuelos: A Case Study of a Mata Ortiz Potterymaking Family
During the last decade many families in Mata Ortiz have become successful potters in their own right. They have done so by seizing the opportunity provided by the popularity of the Quezada family and the American consumer interest in Mata Ortiz earthenware. A case study of the husband/wife team of Roberto and María Bañuelos provides a model illustrating how the lives of these families have changed since they elected to become potters. Roberto esc…

Learning and teaching managerial economics: A Critical Approach
This is the second in our series of survey articles on topics in economics. Mike Williams argues that based, as it is primarily, on neoclassical thinking, Managerial Economics has no adequate theory of production or the creation of use values. It concentrates instead on aspects of business in which exchange and market valorisation are dominant. The author argues that far from being an aid to the rational use of resources and the satisfaction of c…
