Glocalized and Indigenized Theologies in the Twentieth Century
This chapter points at the relocation of theology through the twentieth century out of universities and ‘public thought’ towards privatized and ‘dissenting’ spaces. These include anti-colonialist and proto-nationalist movements in East Africa, India, and Korea, whereby religion became one means by which subaltern groups maintained their identity over and against a ruling class. In other settings, such as in post-war Minjung theology in Korea, ind…
From Reverse to Inverse to Omni-Nodal Dissenting Protestant Mission
This chapter traces the shift from unidirectional Protestant foreign missions at the beginning of the twentieth century to globalized missionary efforts at the end of the century, often fuelled by global migration patterns. These can originate in any country or culture, and end up (along relatively predicable paths dictated by rational markets in education, migration, business, and national interest) in almost any other country. The chapter compa…
Dissenting Preaching in the Twentieth-Century Anglophone World
This chapter points to the shifting social framework for public rhetoric, and the relative position of churches, in the articulation of meaning through preaching in the anglophone world in the twentieth century. Key examples of the art of preaching are explored—Frank Wakely Gunsaulus, Jeremiah Wright, and Peter Taylor Forsyth are discussed among others—to demonstrate that preaching continued to have an effect well into the twentieth century on th…
The Problem with “Waves”
This article explores the problem of using a heuristic such as “waves” to organize historical accounts of pentecostal and charismatic movements. By looking closely at the rise of Italian Pentecostalism and its co-location with multiple sources of revivalism and denominational formation, it seeks to demonstrate that “network” approaches to modelling pentecostal emergence are a more accurate form of heuristic. In the case study, much material not p…

Dreams, Gardens, Mirrors: Layers of Narrative in Takemitsu's Quotation of Dream
Takemitsu's two-piano concertante work Quotation of Dream: Say Sea, Take Me! (1991) is typical of the composer's late works in its rarefied atmosphere and spacious, carefully balanced structure, both qualities which highlight the influence of Claude Debussy. Uniquely within his output, however, here Takemitsu makes this debt explicit: Quotation of Dream is interwoven with a series of direct quotations from Debussy's La Mer, which serve as crucial…
Trains, Plains and Automobiles: New South Wales Political Debates (1985) and the Invention of Western Sydney
There has recently been conjecture as to the decline of the major political traditions and the rise of a more fragmented politics in Australian cities. This paper uses a “slice history” approach to explore the evolving concept of “the West” in Sydney, New South Wales, its place in public debate, and the interplay between centre and periphery during the single “axial” year of 1985. New South Wales Legislative Assembly debates are tabulated, analys…
A Presence in the West: Religious Contributions to the Secular Ideology of an A ustralian U niversity
Between 1972 and 1984, the rise of social justice and religious vocational movements in an increasingly self‐conscious W estern S ydney intersected with the rise of an increasingly influential cadre of politicians, public servants, and educationalists. Mobilising a broader sense of grievance, and organising in community, political, and social groups, these people contributed to a widespread campaign for a university in W estern S ydney which exte…
A Short History of Global Evangelicalism
This book offers an authoritative overview of the history of evangelicalism as a global movement, from its origins in Europe and North America in the first half of the eighteenth century to its present-day dynamic growth in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania. Starting with a definition of the movement within the context of the history of Protestantism, it follows the history of evangelicalism from its early North Atlantic revivals to the gre…
The Spirit of Christ and the Postmodern City: Transforming Revival among Auckland’s Evangelicals and Pentecostals
Snapshots in Sound: Mystère de l'instant and the Legacy of Moment Form
Dutilleux's Mystère de l'instant for cimbalom, strings and percussion (1985–1989) stands out within his output for its unusual approach to large-scale form. Eschewing processes of ‘progressive growth’ and the emphasis upon organic, symphonic continuity which had characterised the composer's mature language, this work presents a succession of self-contained ‘instants’ in which little attempt is made to establish longer-term connections of material…

Cataract Extraction in an English Population
The epidemiology of cataract has attracted little attention. The definition of cataract is difficult enough to make surveys of its prevalence in popu lations of doubtful value. One partial solution is to consider only cataract of a degree sufficient to be operated upon. Fuchs (1960) has published figures snowing a very wide variation in the proportions of patients with cataract admitted to various ophthal mological centres throughout the world, b…
