Subjects and Sojourners: A History of Indochinese in France
During the era of French colonial rule in Indochina, as many as two hundred thousand Indochinese sojourned in France. Subjects and Sojourners is a vivid and comprehensive social, cultural, and political history of this diverse group, which ranged from ruling monarchs to the most marginal laborers. Drawing from a range of rich but underused archives, Charles Keith explores how French colonialism extended Indochina’s colonial society into France, w…
Among All the Nations
I spent much of the first decade of the 2000s writing a book about the Catholic Church in nineteenth and twentieth-century Vietnam. I came to the topic as a scholar of Vietnam, and very much not as a scholar of modern Catholicism. In the project's early stages I searched high and low for a general history to fill in the (many) gaps in my knowledge of the subject. The best I could find was Nicholas Atkin and Frank Tallett's 2003 Priests, Prelates …

Vietnamese Collaborationism in Vichy France
During the Second World War, a small group of Vietnamese émigrés in Vichy France drew powerful inspiration from the ideological and material possibilities of the Nazi occupation. Their history reveals the colonial dimensions of a process of collaboration too often cast as solely European. It also sheds light on the transnational migrations and intellectual circulations that made European experiences an important part of Asian wartime political ch…
The Curious Case of Hoàng Thị Thế
Hoàng Thị Thế, the daughter of a famous figure in the resistance to the French conquest of Vietnam, was glamorous; a self-proclaimed princess and later a film star, she captured the imaginations and attention of those around her. But her life was also sad, full of loss and hardship. And because of who she was, official interest in her, documented in French surveillance files and the propaganda of the revolutionary Vietnamese state, makes her life…
Catholic Vietnam: A Church from Empire to Nation
In this important new study, Charles Keith explores the complex position of the Catholic Church in modern Vietnamese history. By demonstrating how French colonial rule allowed for the transformation of Catholic missions in Vietnam into broad and powerful economic and institutional structures, Keith discovers the ways race defined ecclesiastical and cultural prestige and control of resources and institutional authority. This, along with colonial r…
Catholic Vietnam: A Church from Empire to Nation
This study explores the complex position of the Catholic Church in modern Vietnamese history. It demonstrates how French colonial rule in Indochina allowed for the transformation of Catholic missions in Vietnam into broad and powerful economic and institutional structures in which race defined both ecclesiastical, cultural prestige and control of resources and institutional authority. This, along with colonial rule itself, created a culture of re…
Protestantism and the Politics of Religion in French Colonial Vietnam
Annam Uplifted: The First Vietnamese Catholic Bishops and the Birth of a National Church, 1919–1945
This article explores the place of the first Vietnamese Catholic bishops in the politics and society of late colonial Vietnam. It places the rise of these influential figures in the broader contexts of the decline of missionary Catholicism, the Vatican's push to form national Churches in Asia, and institutional and cultural changes in Vietnamese Catholicism during the interwar years. By doing so, the article explores the links between faith and p…
