  • Catholics and the Campaign for Women's Suffrage in England

    Open Access•Elaine Clark•ARTICLE•Church History•2004•Referências: 10

Narratives about women and religion in Victorian and Edwardian society seldom addressed the world of the Catholic laity, leaving the impression that Catholics were unimportant in English history. Pushed into anonymity, they were easily misunderstood because of their religious sensibilities and loyalty to a church governed not from London but Rome. This was a church long subject to various forms of disability in England and with a membership of ro…

  • Institutional and Legal Responses to Begging in Medieval England

    Open Access•Elaine Clark•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2002•Citada por: 1•Referências: 19

A great many factors other than philanthrophy influenced social policy in England during the Middle Ages. Although political thinkers steadfastly acknowledged the importance of received tradition, especially the religious command to help the poor, many lawmakers were profoundly ambivalent about begging. It is true that the opinion of the nineteenth century implied that medieval almsgiving was so “reckless” that English “beggars had an easy life,”…

  • The Schoolhouse Door

Hugh Davis Graham, E Culpepper Clark et al.•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•1994

On June 11, 1963, in a dramatic gesture that caught the nation's attention, Governor George Wallace physically blocked the entrance to Foster Auditorium on the University of Alabama's campus. His intent was to defy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, sent on behalf of the Kennedy administration to force Alabama to accept court-ordered desegregation. After a tense confrontation, President Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard and Wallac…

  • Social Welfare and Mutual Aid in the Medieval Countryside

    Open Access•Elaine Clark•ARTICLE•Journal of British Studies•1994•Citada por: 5•Referências: 4

Almost every social problem that troubles the conscience of a community has a history. Poverty, hunger, homelessness, the consequences of crime and epidemic disease—all are familiar topics of contemporary discourse that also mattered in the medieval past. Then, as now, questions about social welfare provoked debate and thoughtful comment in courts, churches, and political councils. The parameters of discussion naturally shifted with the ebb and f…

  • The historiographical dilemma in Myrdal's American greed

E Culpepper Clark, Elaine Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Speech•1987•Citada por: 1•Referências: 10

In An American Dilemma (1944), the Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal argued that race relations in America would improve because the American Creed, democratic liberalism, created a dilemma between existing racial practice and the national ideology. The resulting dilemma, he argued, disposed white America to gradual, progressive change. Not only did Myrdal's value‐laden sociology find its way into American jurisprudence through footnote 11 to Brown…

    Open Access•Elaine Clark•ARTICLE•Law and History Review•1985•Citada por: 2•Referências: 2

Very little is known about the young and the orphaned in the villages of medieval England. The span of years constituting childhood as well as the social experiences peculiar to youth must be deduced from either literary sources, including the comments of chroniclers and priests, or legal records generated by coroners, jurors and feudal lords. The variety and scope of this evidence notwithstanding, certain questions about the care of children in …

  • Pitchfork Ben Tillman and the emergence of southern demagoguery

    E Culpepper Clark, Elaine Clark•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Speech•1983•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

Pitchfork Ben Tillman was the forerunner of southern demagoguery. Responding to the South's awakening democracy and the agrarian unrest which accompanied it, Tillman devised strategies of mass appeal not unlike those used by an earlier group of American reformers confronting Jacksonian democracy. An examination of Tillman's rise to power not only shows his kinship with earlier agitators but also reveals the ideological alienation that made his na…

    Open Access•Elaine Clark•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•1982•Citada por: 9•Referências: 2

Medieval historians have long maintained that social welfare in the com munities of rural England often involved private systems of support for the elderly. Individuallv arranged pension plans provide a case in point. The best evidence of these pension plans is found in the records of manor courts. To read the records is to learn how pension plans enabled the elderly to adjust their needs to local patterns of production and domestic structure, to…
