ThePoeta-Theologusfrom Mussato to Landino
Fundamental to the modern conception of historical perspective was the position that nature had its own integrity and that a common human nature underlay human action in history. The first tenet was an achievement of the Scholastics, the second of Italian humanists of the fourteenth century. In order to justify the reading of ancient pagan texts an early humanist Albertino Mussato (1261–1329) had resorted to the late ancient and medieval traditio…
The impact of the permafrost carbon feedback on global climate
Degrading permafrost can alter ecosystems, damage infrastructure, and release enough carbon \ndioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) to influence global climate. The permafrost carbon feedback \n(PCF) is the amplification of surface warming due to CO2 and CH4 emissions from thawing \npermafrost. An analysis of available estimates PCF strength and timing indicate 120 ± 85 Gt of \ncarbon emissions from thawing permafrost by 2100. This is equivalent to 5.7…

Covering a period of over four and a half centuries, this study offers the first integrated analysis of Latin writings produced in the area, examining not only religious, literary, and legal texts. Ronald G. Witt characterizes the changes reflected in…

Francesco Petrarca and the Parameters of Historical Research
Although scholars in the first two generations of humanism wrote the histories drawing heavily on ancient Roman sources, Petrarca was the first humanist historian to focuses on the history of ancient Roma. Because he was also the earliest to approach ancient Romans as historically conditioned human beings, he was able to see the achievements of the Romans in historical perspective. At the same time he was unable to separate mythology from history…

Medieval "Ars Dictaminis" and the Beginnings of Humanism: A New Construction of the Problem
In the almost forty years since he first enunciated his thesis, Paul O. Kristeller's view that the Italian humanists were essentially rhetoricians has found wide acceptance. His analysis of the humanist movement, however, indicates that he includes among the humanists' interests the four other disciplines comprising, along with rhetoric, the studia humanitatis: grammar, poetry, history, and moral philosophy. His decision to characterize the human…

Cino Rinuccini's Risponsiva alla Invettiva di Messer Antonio Lusco
CINO RINUCCINI' S Risponsiva is said to be one of the earliest Florentine works to present a republican interpretation of Roman and Florentine history. While the official correspondence of the Florentine State had been articulating such a concept since the I370's,1 Rinuccini's Risponsiva would appear to be one of the first writings by a private citizen to do so. Interestingly enough, this Florentine citizen, who wrote so eloquently of his city, h…
Coluccio Salutati and the Conception of the Poeta Theologus in the Fourteenth Century
The Italian humanists of the fourteenth century did more than reintegrate the pursuit of eloquence with the concern for ethics, two interests united in the discipline of rhetoric since the time of Cicero but separated in practice by thirteenth-century specialists of ars dictaminis in Italy. Rather their achievement lay in nothing less than Christianizing the European medieval rhetorical tradition. They accomplished this by expressing in terms of …
