The "New Western History" Comes of Age
This excellent set of essays honors Howard R. Lamar, who is retiring after more than four decades of teaching the history of the American West at Yale University. Of the fifty-seven Ph.D. students he has directed or is directing, twelve contributed to this festschrift. Their articles-like the work of the man they celebrate-exhibit bold perspectives, challenging ideas, interdisciplinary research, and freedom from cant and hyperbole. The collection…

An Egyptian Tombstone of 515 H./A.D. 1121 in the National Museum, Athens
In the autumn of 1971, Dr. N. Yialouris was good enough to draw my attention to an unpublished Arab tombstone in the great collection of Egyptian antiquities assembled by Ioannis Demetriou and acquired by the National Archaeological Museum (Ethnikon Arkhaiologikon Mouseion) in Athens in 1880. Assisted by Mr. Nikolaos Boufides, Curator of the Demetriou Collection, I was able to make a rough copy of the inscription (inventory number ANE 34). Dr. Yi…

An Arab Building at Knossos
In April 1971 remains of ancient buildings were brought to light and partly destroyed by a bulldozer in the south-west corner of a field below Makryteikhos village at Knossos. The field lies against the west bank of the Kairatos stream (fig. 1), immediately north of the path which runs down to the stream from the village. The owner, Mr. P. Triandhaphyllou, had put in the bulldozer to prepare the ground for planting. At the request of Dr. St. Alex…

Early Islamic Glass Weights and Measures in Muntaza Palace, Alexandria

Turkish Pala "Sword" and Its Derivatives
IN THREE of the standard English dictionaries 1 there appears word balas, which seems never actually to have existed in English or in any other language, and which therefore ought, for the sake of lexicographical accuracy, to be killed . In order to kill the word properly it has been necessary to determine the manner in which it came into the English dictionaries and also, incidentally, into an Arabic dictionary, and to follow the etymological hi…
